Maybin retires after 15 seasons

   After almost two decades, an MLB journeyman is hanging up the cleats. Veteran OF Cameron Maybin has announced his retirement from baseball after 15 seasons in the majors, according to an announcement made by Maybin on Monday night.

   In a part of Maybin's announcement on Twitter, he says "Although my journey as a professional baseball player ends here with the announcement of my retirement, my work in this game is just getting started. I'm excited for what lies ahead, including my work with the Players Alliance in our effort to provide access and opportunity for the next generation of Black ballplayers."

   The big league debut for Maybin came on August 17, 2007, with the Detroit Tigers. After that day, he spent 15 years in the majors with 10 different teams. He most recently played 9 games in 2021 with the New York Mets, recording just one hit in 33 plate appearances. He won a world series ring in 2017 with the Houston Astros, playing pivotal pinch running and hitting roles.

   Across the 15 year career of Maybin, he retires with a .254 batting average and .697 OPS, hitting 72 home runs with 354 RBI's, with 187 stolen bases in 1,162 regular season games. In 3 seasons of playoff baseball, Maybin has a .267 batting average and .820 OPS, with one home run and 3 stolen bases in 13 playoff games.

   Maybin was a draft choice of the Tigers, selected with the 10th overall pick out of TC Roberson High School in North Carolina in the 2005 MLB Draft. In his career, Maybin has suited up for the Tigers, Astros, Mets, Miami Marlins, San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, New York Yankees, and Chicago Cubs.
