If there's anything that Chaim Bloom likes to do, it's look for pitching depth wherever possible. The Boston Red Sox have signed RHP Taylor Cole to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive. The deal has been confirmed by the Red Sox.

Cole last appeared in the major leagues for the Los Angeles Angels in 2019, and was unable to play in the minor leagues in 2020 due to the cancellation of that season, and missed all of the 2021 season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery. He pitched for Tigres de Licey in the Dominican Winter League, with a 2.08 ERA in 7 appearances.

In the 2019 season, Cole finished with a 3-4 record with a 5.92 ERA and 1.58 WHIP, punching out 50 hitters across 51 2/3 innings, making 6 starts and 32 relief appearances. In parts of 3 seasons in the majors, Cole has a 7-6 record with a 4.97 ERA and 1.36 WHIP, throwing 88 2/3 innings across 8 starts and 49 relief appearances.

Cole's professional career began when he was selected by the Blue Jays in the 29th round of the 2011 MLB Draft out of BYU. He wound his way through the Blue Jays system before he made his MLB debut in 2017, appearing in one game and throwing one inning, where he was charged with 4 runs.

The following season, Cole signed with the Angels, and spent 2018 and 2019 in both Triple A and the majors, making 56 appearances in the majors. The highlight of his tenure with the Angels came on July 12, 2019, when he was a part of a combined no hitter by the Angels on the night they honored Tyler Skaggs, with Cole throwing the first two innings of the no-no.

The signing of Cole, who can both start and come out of the bullpen, marks the 5th non roster invite to major league spring training by the Red Sox. Cole joins Rob Refsnyder, Michael Feliz, Zack Kelly, and Christin Stewart as non roster invites.
