After Aaron Brooks returned to MLB after a stint overseas recently, another guy is doing the same. The Arizona Diamondbacks and RHP Dan Straily have agreed to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training, according to an announcement by the Reno Aces, the D-Backs Triple A affiliate.

After the 2019 season, Straily went overseas to play in the KBO, pitching for the Lotte Giants. The 2020 season, his first year for the Giants, Straily put together a marvelous campaign, authoring a 2.50 ERA and 1.02 WHIP in 31 starts, while becoming the first KBO pitcher to record 200 strikeouts in a season in 8 years, racking up 205.

The 2021 season for the Giants was a bit of a step back for Straily. In the offense heavy KBO, Straily picked up 164 strikeouts, good for 5th best in the league, but he struggled to a 4.07 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 165 2/3 innings on the mound.

Straily last pitched in the majors in 2019, spending the year with the Baltimore Orioles. Straily finished 2019 with a 2-4 record with a ballooned 9.82 ERA and 1.99 WHIP, recording just 33 strikeouts over 47 2/3 innings pitched, making 8 starts and coming out of the bullpen 6 times for the Orioles, who wound up with the second overall pick in the 2020 draft.

In his MLB career, spanning 8 seasons, Straily has a lifetime 44-40 record, with a 4.56 ERA and 1.31 WHIP, throwing 803 1/3 innings in 140 starts and 16 relief appearances, split between 6 different teams. He has just one game of postseason experience, a start in the 2013 ALDS for the Oakland Athletics, ending in a no decision.

After all the D-Backs pitching problems in 2021, they enter spring training, whenever it does begin, with Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, Madison Bumgarner, and Luke Weaver as the likely top 4 in the starting rotation. The 5th spot is the toss up, with Straily to compete with Humberto Mejia, Humberto Castellanos, Taylor Widener, and Caleb Smith for either that spot or a bullpen role.
