Red Sox signing Story

The final big shortstop domino of the offseason has fallen. The Boston Red Sox and SS Trevor Story have agreed to a 6 year, $140 million deal, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. The Red Sox have not confirmed the deal.

Story will immediately become the starting second baseman in Boston, with manager Alex Cora committing to Xander Bogaerts at shortstop. Bogaerts has an opt out after this season, which, if he were to sign elsewhere, would put Story back at shortstop. If he doesn't opt out, or gets an extension, than Story and Bogaerts form a deadly middle infield combination, both offensively and defensively.

In his contract, Story has an opt out after the 4th year of his deal. That opt out can be negated if the Red Sox pick up the team option for a 7th year of the deal prior to year 4 of the deal, which would lock in Story for all 7 years. There are no details involving a no trade clause.

Bogaerts, when asked about the possibility of signing Story earlier in spring training, said that "He’s a big bat. We know what he does defensively already. I think that bat would play really well at Fenway just with that short porch over there. He has a nice swing that’s kind of built for that. It would be nice if we could get an addition like that after some of the big names that we lost to free agency or traded away. That’s a big boy. That’s a big bat right there. That’s an impact player."

Last season, with the Colorado Rockies, Story finished the regular season with a .251 batting average with a .471 slugging percentage and .801 OPS, hitting 24 home runs with 75 RBI's, stealing 20 bases in 142 regular season games for the Rockies, who finished in 4th place in the NL West after trading Nolan Arenado.

in Story's 6 year career, all in a Rockies uniform, he has two all star game appearances and a .272 average, with a .523 slugging percentage and .863 OPS, mashing 158 home runs with 450 RBI's, stealing exactly 100 bases in 745 games. Story has one home run and 7 hits in 5 career playoff games.

Story will immediately become the starting second baseman for the Red Sox, with Rafael Devers at 3rd, Bogaerts at short, and Bobby Dalbec at first. Story joins Michael Wacha, Rich Hill, James Paxton, and Jackie Bradley Jr as new additions to the Red Sox this offseason.
