Rockies land Colome

A pitcher that could be considered a reclamation project of sorts is on his way to Mile High. Yeah, I don't get it either. The Colorado Rockies and RHP Alex Colome have agreed to a one year contract, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. The Rockies have confirmed the deal.

Last season, in a Minnesota Twins uniform, Colome struggled to a 4-4 record with a 4.15 ERA and 1.40 WHIP, striking out 58 hitters and recording 17 saves in 67 relief appearances, totaling 65 innings pitched. Although he did record 17 saves, Colome blew several chances as well, leading to him being removed from the closers role altogether.

It's those kind of struggles that make me wonder why he signed with the Rockies, especially given that he'll play half the time at Coors Field. Oh sure, he only allowed 8 home runs last season, but opposing hitters slugged .411 against him, and at Coors Field, with how the balls fly out of there, that number is set to rise if he can't improve.

However, Colome can't be given up on as a closer yet. He has 155 career saves to his name, including an MLB leading 47 saves in 2017 with the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rockies have some late inning options already, but Colome can always be a setup option, or he could win the closer job outright.

In his 9 major league seasons, to go with his 155 saves, Colome has a 32-27 record with a 3.11 ERA and 1.20 WHIP, striking out 443 hitters and allowing 44 home runs in 489 innings pitched, totaling 19 starts and 374 relief appearances. He has one save in two playoff games.

In the Rockies bullpen, Colome joins Daniel Bard and Carlos Estevez as closing options, as Bard and Estevez combined for 31 of the Rockies 33 saves last season. No matter who is the closer, the Rockies seem to be addressing their bullpen with this move, and it could work out nicely.
