Yankees agree to keep Rizzo

One of the New York Yankees famed deadline acquisitions is back in the fold. The Yankees and 1B Anthony Rizzo have agreed to a two year, $32 million deal, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The Yankees have confirmed the deal.

Rizzo was one of the top trade deadline gets for the Yankees, arriving alongside Joey Gallo, Joely Rodriguez, Clay Holmes, and Andrew Heaney last July. Now, by re-signing, Heaney is the only member of that group not on the Yankees at this time, after signing with the Dodgers at the beginning of free agency.

The Yankees settled on re-signing Rizzo after being unwilling to part with the prospects necessary to acquire Matt Olson in a trade with the Oakland Athletics, who instead went to the Atlanta Braves. They also couldn't get Freddie Freeman, as he signed a 6 year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, so they pivoted back to Rizzo and got a deal done.

Last season, playing 92 games with the Chicago Cubs and 49 with the Yankees, Rizzo finished with a .248 batting average and .783 OPS, slugging .440 and hitting 22 home runs, driving in 61 while playing in 141 regular season games, and the 2021 AL Wild Card game, where the Yankees lost.

In Rizzo's 11 seasons in the majors, split between 3 different teams, Rizzo has a .268 batting average, .481 slugging percentage, and .850 OPS, hitting 251 home runs to go with 814 RBI's in 1,406 games. In 40 career playoff games, including a world series title in 2016, Rizzo has 7 home runs and 19 RBI's, with a .207 average.

Back in New York, Rizzo figures to be the Yankees opening day first baseman, thus placing a cloud over Luke Voit's future with the team. Voit could become the DH, with Giancarlo Stanton making starts in the outfield, or he could be traded.
