The potential next stars of the Los Angeles Angels are making their marks known early in the season. Brandon Marsh homered, Jo Adell homered, and the Angels defeated the Miami Marlins with a 6-2 victory on Monday night in Anaheim.

The Angels improve to 2-3 on the season with the win, after dropping 3 of 4 to the Houston Astros to start the season. Marsh and Adell drove the entire Angels offense, with Marsh driving in 4 runs, and Adell pitching in another two runs, driving the Angels lineup this time around.

It was also a monumental start for Michael Lorenzen, a new signing of the Angels. Lorenzen, who was born in Anaheim, graduated from Fullerton Union High School, and went to California State University Fullerton for college, made the longest start of the season by an Angels pitcher in the win.

Lorenzen said of getting a win at home that "I'd been looking forward to starting for a really long time and to be able to do it in front of my family and friends, it's a dream come true. I'm super blessed for the opportunity. I remember thinking I'll never get this opportunity again. It's my first start for my hometown team and so just go for it. And so it was a blast."

The Angels got on the board almost immediately in this one, with Marsh giving them an early 3-0 lead, blasting a 3 run home run to center field, his first home run of the season. In the second inning, Adell hit a solo home run to center, putting the Angels ahead 4-0 rather early on. In the 4th, Jesus Sanchez got the Marlins on the board with a solo homer of his own, making it 4-1 Angels.

It remained a 4-1 game until the 8th inning, when Marsh socked a double to center field, scoring catcher Max Stassi to make it 5-1 Angels. Marsh promptly scored on an RBI double from Adell to make it a 6-1 game. Sanchez hit his second homer of the night in the 9th inning to make it a 6-2 Angels win.

It was Lorenzen who got the win for the Angels, allowing one run on two hits, walking no one and striking out 7 hitters over 6 innings of work. Aaron Loup and Ryan Tepera came on in relief, each picking up holds with scoreless innings of work. Raisel Iglesias locked it down in the 9th to secure the win.

Angels manager Joe Maddon said of Lorenzen's game that "He had his sinker working today and I loved it. I loved every bit of his performance. The breaking ball was good and so was the slider, but that bowling ball sinker, that plays all the time. He could've gone even deeper but before the game we wanted him right around 85 and that's right around where he ended up."

Getting the start for the Marlins was Elieser Hernandez, who got the loss. Hernandez lasted 4 2/3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks, with 6 strikeouts. After Tanner Scott and Cody Poteet had scoreless appearances, Shawn Armstrong allowed two runs in one inning of work.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly said of Hernandez's game that "It took him a little bit to get going. He really hadn’t pitched in a while. I’m sure he wouldn’t want to make excuses and it seemed like once he got his breaking ball going and his offspeed pitches going, he did a nice job of holding it there."

The Angels and Marlins continue their series on Tuesday night, with Jesus Luzardo getting the start for the Marlins, and Patrick Sandoval going for the Angels.
