The San Diego Padres recognized the importance of starting pitching depth, and continue to load up. The Padres have acquired LHP Sean Manaea and RHP Aaron Holiday from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for IF Euribiel Angeles and RHP Adrian Martinez, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Both teams have confirmed the trade.

In San Diego, Manaea is set to join what is looking to be a scary good Padres starting rotation entering 2022. Manaea joins Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, Joe Musgrove, and Chris Paddack as current rotation arms. Mike Clevinger is opening the season on the IL as he returns from Tommy John surgery, but is a late April option for a return. Adrian Morejon will return from Tommy John around midseason, and Ryan Weathers and Mackenzie Gore loom in Triple A El Paso.

Manaea could potentially slot into the number two spot in the rotation, with Yu Darvish being tabbed as the opening day starter by manager Bob Melvin. Manaea's spring start on Sunday lines him up for the second game of the season on Friday, April 8, with Joe Musgrove as the 3rd starter, with Snell and Paddack rounding out the rotation.

Last season, his 6th in the majors, Manaea finished the year with a 11-10 record, to go with a 3.91 ERA and 1.22 WHIP, striking out 194 hitters and walking 41, throwing 179 1/3 innings pitched across 32 starts, two of which were complete game shutouts.

In his 6 major league seasons, all with the Athletics, Manaea has a career 50-41 record, with a 3.86 ERA and 1.20 WHIP, fanning 641 hitters and walking 180, throwing 727 innings and making 128 starts, and one relief appearance. Manaea has a 0-2 record with a 11.37 ERA across just 6 1/3 innings in two career playoff starts.

It's Martinez, one half of the return Oakland got, that is the closest to appearing in the majors. Martinez was ranked as the 26th overall prospect in the Padres system by MLB Pipeline, and got promoted late in the 2021 season to Triple A. Overall, he finished 2021 with a 8-5 record with a 3.38 ERA in 125 innings pitched, making 22 starts and 4 relief appearances between Double and Triple A.

Angeles comes to Oakland as the 12th ranked prospect in the Padres system, and has played all over the infield, with the exception of first base. Angeles spent 2021 between Low A Lake Elsinore and High A Fort Wayne, finishing the season with a combined .330 batting average and .837 OPS, hitting 4 home runs with 64 RBI's in 105 games.

The acquisition of Manaea comes after the Padres traded Adam Frazier, and traded for Jorge Alfaro and Luke Voit this offseason. The A's have been tearing things down, trading Manaea, Chris Bassitt, Matt Olson, and Matt Chapman this offseason.
