Chicago certainly is called the Windy City for a reason, and we saw that. Jarred Kelenic homered, Mitch Haniger homered, and the Seattle Mariners cruised past the Chicago White Sox with a 5-1 win on Thursday afternoon on the south side of Chicago.

One day after playing through a good amount of rain on Wednesday, the Mariners and White Sox encountered a different enemy, and it was the wind. At first pitch, the wind was blowing at 29 miles an hour, making no flyball routine. The one run for the White Sox came on a wind driven single in the 5th inning.

After starting the season 3-0, the Mariners were in the midst of a 4 game losing streak, with the Mariners being able to end that skid on Thursday. Driving the Mariners offense was the long ball, with 3 home runs by Seattle hitters accounting for the 5 runs scored, including two big ones from the bat of Kelenic.

Kelenic talked about his home run, saying that "Last night, I was laying in my hotel room and I was looking at old videos when I was in high school. And I didn’t think about anything. I just got in the box. Today, my goal was to get in the box and just compete against the pitcher."

The Mariners got the scoring started in the second inning, when Kelenic blasted a two run home run, his first of the season going to right field, hitting off the foul pole to make it 2-0 Mariners. In the 5th, Jake Burger's wind driven RBI single scored Adam Engel, putting the White Sox on the board to make it a 2-1 game.

In the 7th inning, the Mariners took a 3-1 lead, thanks to Cal Raleigh knocking a solo home run out of the park. In the 8th inning, Mitch Haniger took a drive out to left field, good for a two run home run to put the Mariners ahead 5-1 late, sealing the win.

Getting the start and the win for the Mariners was Logan Gilbert, improving to 1-0 on the season. Gilbert allowed one run on 4 hits, striking out 4 hitters while walking zero hitters. Andres Munoz got the hold with a scoreless 6th inning out of the bullpen. Drew Steckenrider followed that with a shutout 7th inning, with Diego Castillo and Paul Sewald pitching to end the game.

Mariners manager Scott Servais said of Gilbert's start that it was a "Heck of a job by Logan. Keeping his composure as they kept popping the ball up. He threw the ball really well and he was ahead in the count all day. It was great to see."

It was Jimmy Lambert who got the start for the White Sox, taking the loss to drop to 0-1 on the season. Lambert allowed two runs on two hits and one walk, lasting just 3 innings in the start. Tanner Banks delivered two shutout innings in relief, followed by appearances from Matt Foster, Jose Ruiz, Bennett Sousa, and Anderson Severino.

White Sox manager Tony La Russa said of the loss that "I felt better last night than I do now. I've never had a problem giving the other team credit when they out-pitch you, out-hit you, out-play you. We had a chance, we hung in there but we couldn't get anything going. That's to their credit."

Both teams start weekend series at home on Friday, with the White Sox hosting the Tampa Bay Rays, where Dylan Cease will start. The Mariners take on the Houston Astros, with Marco Gonzales taking the mound.
