A crazy crosstown series had a crazy crosstown ending. Adam Engel drove in the tying run, Jake Burger brought in the winning run, and the Chicago White Sox defeated the Chicago Cubs with a 5-4 win in 12 innings on Sunday afternoon in the South Side of Chicago.

After a rare two game Saturday-Sunday series with their crosstown rivals, the White Sox salvaged a split of those two games, getting to a 23-23 .500 record, having gone exactly 5-5 in their last 10 games. The currently banged up White Sox won again, but they also lost another player.

While fielding a ground ball from the Cubs PJ Higgins in the outfield grass, White Sox star shortstop Tim Anderson sustained a right groin strain. Team trainers and manager Tony La Russa immediately came out, and had to help Anderson off the field. La Russa said after the game that Anderson would be going on the IL.

Burger said of Anderson's injury that "It's devastating. We were all around him. You saw all nine guys out there around him. It's tough. He's such a leader and such an impactful person in this clubhouse that it will be tough. But he'll always be with us no matter what it is."

After the first 6 innings of the game went scoreless, Rafael Ortega scored on an error in the 7th inning, getting the Cubs a 1-0 lead. In the 9th inning, the White Sox tied it up when AJ Pollock scored on a wild pitch. In the 10th, Nico Hoerner scored on a sac bunt from Higgins, and Higgins then scored on an RBI single to make it 3-1, before the White Sox got those two runs back in the bottom half.

In the 11th inning, Ian Happ scored on a sac fly from Alfonso Rivas, putting the Cubs back in front by a 4-3 score. In the bottom of the 11th, Pollock scored on an RBI single from Adam Engel, tying it 4-4. In the bottom of the 12th inning, against a rare 5 man infield, Burger hit the game winning RBI single to left field, scoring Danny Mendick.

Burger said of his walk off hit that "I made eye contact with Danny Mendick at third base and we both just started laughing because I hadn't seen that in a while and I think that kind of relaxed me a little bit. I just wanted to see something up and try to get something to the outfield and, sure enough, it was the first pitch."

Matt Foster got the win out of the bullpen for the White Sox, with a scoreless 12th inning. Dylan Cease turned in a fantastic start, allowing one run on two hits and 4 walks over 7 innings pitched. Kendall Graveman and Liam Hendriks each had scoreless innings, before Reynaldo Lopez gave up two runs in the 10th, and Aaron Bummer pitched the 11th inning.

It was Marcus Stroman who had a fantastic outing for the Cubs, pitching 7 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and two walks. Robert Gsellman blew it in the 12th, getting the loss out of the bullpen. Mychal Givens, David Robertson, and Scott Effross also pitched.

Asked about his strong performance, Stroman said that "I’m always going to go out there and compete, regardless of how I feel. I’m always going to do my best to put everything aside. I know I can be better and I’m just trying to get to that point."

Up next, the Cubs host the Milwaukee Brewers for a doubleheader on Monday, with Matt Swarmer getting the start in game one, and Drew Smyly going in game two. After a day off on Monday, the White Sox take on the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night, with Lucas Giolito to get the start.
