Detmers tosses no hitter as Angels top Rays

Reid Detmers was chosen in the first round for a pretty good reason. Mike Trout homered twice, Detmers threw the no-no, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Tampa Bay Rays with a 12-0 no hitter on Tuesday night in Anaheim.

The Angels selected Detmers out of Louisville back in the 2020 MLB draft, selecting him with the 10th overall pick in the draft. He was put on the fast track to the big leagues, debuting at the tail end of last season and entered this start with only 10 others under his belt. His 11th start, however, was one to remember.

Detmers has thrown the second no hitter in baseball this season, and first individual no hitter, as the Mets threw a combined no hitter earlier this season. Detmers was the first Angel to throw an individual no hitter since Jered Weaver did so in 2012, and the first Angels no hitter since a combined no hitter in 2019, on the night honoring the late Tyler Skaggs. Detmers is also the youngest Angels pitcher and first lefty to throw a no hitter since Clyde Wright in 1970.

Asked about his mound approach, Detmers said that "I was just trying to get ahead, but I couldn't tell you much more. I remember talking to Wise and he told me to pound the zone. With two strikes on the last hitter, I was shaking a little bit, but other than that I tried to keep myself composed. It just still hasn’t sunk in."

In the first inning, the Angels took a 2-0 lead on an RBI groundout from Anthony Rendon and an RBI single from Jared Walsh. In the second inning, an RBI single from Andrew Velazquez, a sac fly from Brandon Marsh, and a solo home run from Trout made the Angels lead 5-0 after two innings.

One inning later, in the 3rd, recently called up Chad Wallach blasted a 3 run home run to left field, clearing the bases to make it 8-0 in favor of the Angels. It stayed that way until the 8th inning. There, Trout made the lead 10-0 when he blasted his second home run of the night, this one a two run home run. Rendon then hit a two run home run of his own, making it 12-0 Angels. Detmers did the rest on the mound.

Angels manager Joe Maddon said of Detmers that "He had a much better mound presence tonight. He just looked and felt the part. Hopefully we are going to get a lot of residue of that in the future, because he's capable of that. Maybe not of no-hitters, I’m just saying that’s how he should pitch. That’s what he should look like more often."

It was Corey Kluber who got the loss for the Rays, allowing 8 runs on 11 hits across only 3 innings. After he got shelled, Jason Adam, Colin Poche, Ryan Thompson, and JP Feyereisen each had scoreless innings of relief. Outfielder Brett Phillips pitched the 8th inning, giving up 4 runs, the home runs to Trout and Rendon.

Rays infielder Taylor Walls said of being no hit that "It definitely is a punch in the gut. Kind of takes a hit at your pride a little bit. But we're going to go to sleep and wake up tomorrow the same way we did this morning, same way we're going to do every day from here on out."

Up next, the Angels and Rays conclude their series on Wednesday night, with the Angels sending two way dynamo Shohei Ohtani to the mound. The Rays will start Shane McClanahan.
