Concerns on defense aside, the Philadelphia Phillies sure can mash the ball. Jean Segura homered, Rhys Hoskins homered, and the Phillies routed the Seattle Mariners with a 9-0 shutout win on Monday night in Seattle.

Entering their west coast road trip having lost 5 out of their last 6 games, the Phillies offense woke up and shut out the Mariners with a 9 run drubbing. Segura led the way with a home run and 3 RBI's, while 3 other Phillies hitters drove in two runs each.

Phillies manager Joe Girardi said of the hitting that "Segura got us going in that second inning, and then Hoskins hits one, and then you tack on some runs later, and Suarez knows what he is supposed to do. It wasn’t necessarily easy for him. He had some traffic, but he pitched around some jams and did a really nice job."

The Phillies got on the board in the second inning, with Segura whacking a solo home run to center field, putting the Phillies up 1-0. The next batter was Hoskins, who drilled a home run to left field, doubling the lead to make it a 2-0 score. In the 3rd inning, Nick Castellanos scored on a JT Realmuto RBI single, making it 3-0 in favor of the Phillies.

In the 5th inning, Alec Bohm scored on an RBI double by Castellanos, increasing the lead to 4-0. Realmuto then added another RBI single, scoring Bryce Harper to make it 5-0 Phillies. Castellanos then scored after Segura reached on a fielders choice, making it a 3 run 5th inning to make it a 6-0 lead for the Phillies.

In the 7th inning, the Phillies hit a trio of RBI singles, increasing their lead to 9-0. First it was Castellanos, scoring Harper. Castellanos then scored on a single by Segura. It became 9-0 when Segura scored on a single from Hoskins.

Getting the start for the Phillies was Ranger Suarez, who pitched a gem. Suarez threw 6 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits and two walks while striking out 7 hitters. Francisco Morales threw two shutout relief innings, while James Norwood closed it out in the 9th inning.

Suarez said of his shutout that "When you pitch a shutout game like that, it gives you a lot of confidence. It’s a confidence booster, but it's not only a confidence booster for me. I really have to thank my defense, and the team overall. They’ve been great to me, and I’m lucky to have a great defense behind me."

Chris Flexen got the start for the Mariners, taking the loss to fall to 1-5 on the season. Flexen allowed 6 runs on 9 hits while lasting just 5 innings. Penn Murfee threw a shutout 6th inning, before Diego Castillo got rocked for 3 runs while getting just two outs. Danny Young then came on for 2 1/3 innings of shutout relief work.

Seattle manager Scott Servais said that "Like I told the team, nobody feels sorry for you in this league. You've got to show up. You've got to compete every night, and tonight we didn't do a very good job, obviously. We got our lunch handed to us."

The series between the Phillies and Mariners continues on Tuesday night, where Aaron Nola gets the ball for the Phillies, opposed by Seattle's Robbie Ray.
