The stars of the show for the St. Louis Cardinals this season have been their pitchers. Tommy Edman homered, Dakota Hudson pitched shut down ball, and the Cardinals defeated the San Francisco Giants with a 4-0 shutout win on Saturday afternoon in St. Louis.

Getting the job done on the pitching side was Hudson and 4 relief pitchers, allowing 8 hits in 9 innings, with Cardinals pitching throwing their 6th shutout of the season, good for second in the major leagues. They got just enough hitting to support the pitching staff and get the win.

Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said of the win that "If we’re going to go through this stretch where we’ve talked about our offense quite a bit, we’re going to have to win ballgames the way we did. We pitch well, we play good defense, make good decisions and score three or four runs. There will be a stretch where we will score runs, but you still have to win when you aren’t feeling great."

In the second inning, Brendan Donovan got the Cardinals on the board, putting them ahead 1-0 on an RBI double to right field, scoring Yadier Molina. In the 5th inning, Edman doubled the lead for the Cardinals, making it a 2-0 lead with a solo home run to center field.

Two innings later, in the 7th, Paul Goldschmidt extended the Cardinals lead, making it a 3-0 game on an RBI double to center field that scored Edmundo Sosa. It became a 4-0 Cardinals lead when Goldschmidt came around to score on an RBI double from Nolan Arenado.

Improving to 3-2 on the season with the win was Hudson, who threw 5 shutout innings, allowing 5 hits and two walks, striking out two hitters. Genesis Cabrera struck out two in a shutout 6th inning, followed by scoreless appearances from Andre Pallante, Ryan Helsley, and Giovanny Gallegos out of the bullpen.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler said of Hudson's pitching that it was "Pretty much as advertised and who he's been this season. It's a groundball style. It's an attack the strike zone style. He did a nice job of keeping us off balance, and we weren't able to get the big hit."

For the Giants, Jakob Junis got the start and the loss, allowing two runs on 6 hits and one walk in 5 2/3 innings, dropping to 1-1 this season. John Brebbia came on in relief and allowed two runs in 1 1/3 innings, before Camilo Doval came on for the 8th inning and delivered a scoreless outing in relief of Junis and Brebbia.

Asked about his start, Junis said that "It wasn’t really an effective offering for me today, which is tough because I would have loved to take some of the load off the slider and thrown more of those today. It just really wasn't in the cards."

The Cardinals and Giants conclude their weekend series on Sunday night, with Adam Wainwright taking the mound for the Cardinals, while the Giants start Carlos Rodon.
