This series was a long time coming for the Seattle Mariners. Cal Raleigh homered and drove in two, Ty France homered, and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Houston Astros with a 6-3 victory on Wednesday night in Houston.

The Mariners have now won 6 of their last 10 games, including two out of 3 against the Astros, securing their first series win in Houston since 2018. They were led by home runs from Raleigh and France, which proved the difference maker.

Mariners manager Scott Servais said of the series win that "You have to eventually get to that point, or we’re never going to win the west. That’s where it’s at. I thought we played really well against them at home, but it’s different in this ballpark. They’re really tough to beat here.”

In the first inning, Yordan Alvarez hit an RBI single, giving the Astros a 1-0 lead early. In the 3rd, a JP Crawford RBI single tied the game 1-1. Alvarez hit an RBI double in the bottom of the 3rd, followed by an RBI single from Kyle Tucker, making it 3-1 Astros.

In the 4th, Raleigh whacked a two run home run to center field, tying the game by a 3-3 score. France followed that up with a solo shot, putting the Mariners ahead 4-3. In the 5th, Adam Frazier made it 5-3 with a sac fly, and Jesse Winker hit an RBI single in the 8th to make it 6-3.

Servais said after the game that "Guys, they grind, and we’re starting to understand what that’s about. Guys, you get a long road trip, you’ve got late travel. Guys are tired. You have to grind through it if you want to win, and I think they do want to win in a really bad way.”

It was Logan Gilbert who got the win for the Mariners, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, striking out 3 hitters over 6 innings. Andres Muñoz and Paul Sewald each had scoreless innings, and Diego Castillo got the save in the 9th inning.

For the Astros, it was Jose Urquidy who started, getting the loss after allowing 5 runs on 7 hits over 4 1/3 innings. Brandon Bielak allowed just one run in 3 innings of relief work, followed by a scoreless appearance from Seth Martinez, lasting 1 2/3 innings.

Astros pitching coach Josh Miller said of Urquidy that "His stuff has looked good, we’ve seen an uptick in velocity this year. It’s also been a little bit harder of a changeup leading into this start. I feel like he still has some issues where he gets ahead in the count and throws too hittable of pitches, but his stuff has largely been good. He just needs to execute better.”

Both teams get back in action on Friday, with Marco Gonzales starting for the Mariners as they host the Boston Red Sox. The Astros face the Miami Marlins, with Luis Garcia starting.
