Needing a win, the San Francisco Giants went wild at the plate. Mike Yastrzemski drove in two runs, Wilmer Flores homered twice, and the Giants routed the San Diego Padres with a 12-0 shutout victory on Sunday afternoon in San Diego.

The rout for the Giants helped them gain in the NL Wild card race, even though it's just their second straight win, and 3rd in their last 10 games. Flores and his 4 RBI's led the way, with Yastrzemski and Thairo Estrada picking up two RBI's apiece.

Giants catcher Austin Wynns said that "We’re trying to keep a good atmosphere in this clubhouse, especially on the field with everything going on. We need to make sure the clubhouse is solid, and it is. We’re going to keep on taking steps forward to do that. If you’re around positive people, positive energy, you play better."

The Giants got on the board in the second inning, when Estrada hit a two run home run. The lead then became 4-0 when Flores added a two run home run of his own one inning later. In the 4th inning, RBI singles from Wynns, Austin Slater, and Luis Gonzalez, plus an RBI triple from Yastrzemski, made it a 8-0 ballgame.

In the 7th inning, the Giants made it a 9-0 game when David Villar scored on an infield single from Yastrzemski. Joey Bart also scored in the 7th to make it 10-0. In the 8th, Estrada came around to score on an RBI single from Bart to make the lead 11-0. A solo home run by Flores in the 9th made it a 12-0 score.

Giants manager Gabe Kapler said that it was a "Nice performance by the guys. Just kind of staying loose through these times when we're struggling a little bit for an extended period of time, knowing that they're going to have games like this also on the other side."

Drawing the start for the Giants was Alex Wood, who shined in the series finale. Wood pitched 7 shutout innings, allowing 3 hits and one walk while striking out 8 hitters, getting the win. Yunior Marte then came out of the bullpen, pitching two shutout innings to close out the game.

Rookie MacKenzie Gore got the start for the Padres, and got roughed up to the tune of 8 runs on 8 hits and one walk over 3 1/3 innings pitched. Tayler Scott threw 2 1/3 innings of relief before Dinelson Lamet allowed 3 runs in 2 1/3 innings, and Matthew Batten allowed one run in one inning.

Padres manager Bob Melvin said of Gore's start that "They were on his fastball today. It was apparent in innings two, three, four that they were sitting on his fastball, and he wasn’t locating as well as he normally does. He had a tough day. We always try to discuss where he’s at. We’re going to have that discussion, whether we need to give him a break, put him in the bullpen for a game. His velo’s down a little bit."

Up next, the Giants welcome the Arizona Diamondbacks to town on Monday, with Alex Cobb getting the series opening start. The Padres travel to face the Colorado Rockies on Monday, with Sean Manaea starting.
