This was a game the New York Mets really wanted, to put down a statement. That they did. Pete Alonso homered, Starling Marte drove in the winning run, and the Mets defeated the New York Mets with a 3-2 victory on Wednesday night in Queens.

By sweeping the subway series, the Mets got themselves a statement, winning their 3rd game in a row and 7 out of 10. They improve to 61-37 this season, sitting 5 games back of the Yankees current win total. It was also a crucial win for the Mets to keep relative distance on first place in the NL East.

Mets starter Max Scherzer said of the subway series win on his birthday that "This is fun. This is for bragging rights of New York. You want to come to the park and get a win. That’s all I wanted for my birthday. So that’s what we got."

Starting the scoring in this one was Alonso, who ran into a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning, putting the Mets ahead 1-0 early. One inning later, in the 3rd, Francisco Lindor singled into right field, bringing home Tomas Nido to put the Mets up by a 2-0 margin, doubling their lead.

That margin stayed 2-0 until the 8th inning. With a runner on base, Gleyber Torres smacked a two run home run to right field, tying the game 2-2 at that point. In the bottom of the 9th inning, with two runners on base, Marte delivered the game winning single, scoring Eduardo Escobar to give the Mets a 3-2 walk off victory.

Getting the start for the Mets was Scherzer, who pitched a dominant game. Scherzer pitched 7 shutout innings, allowing 5 hits and two walks while striking out 6. David Peterson got one out while giving up two runs, bringing on Seth Lugo for the final 5 outs, and he was able to close out the game.

Asked about working with Scherzer against Aaron Judge, Nido said that "I’m sure as a hitter, you go up there, ‘Oh, he’s pitching me the slider,’ so sometimes you sit on it. But he seemed to think that we were trying to trick him or something."

Taking the loss for the Yankees was Wandy Peralta, only getting one out in the 9th inning. Domingo German got the start for the Yankees, allowing two runs over 4 2/3 innings of work. Lucas Luetge followed with two shutout innings, before Jonathan Loaisiga and Clay Holmes saw action.

Up next, the Yankees are back in action for a Thursday night home game with the Kansas City Royals, with Jameson Taillon lined up to start. The Mets head to Florida to face the Miami Marlins on Friday, with Chris Bassit to get the start.
