Every time that summer rolls around, Kyle Schwarber just becomes a machine. Schwarber homered twice, JT Realmuto homered and drove in 3 runs, and the Philadelphia Phillies routed the Washington Nationals with a 11-0 victory on Tuesday night in Philadelphia.

In the first game of a series against one of their divisional rivals, the Phillies scored early and often, bludgeoning the Nationals thanks to the contributions of Schwarber, Realmuto, and Nick Castellanos, with those 3 being responsible for 7 of the 11 Phillies runs. The Phillies are 6-4 in their last 10 games.

Phillies interim manager Rob Thomson said of Schwarber that "He seems like he’s right in the middle of everything. Every time we score a run, it seems like he’s right around there and doing something, either getting on base or slugging."

Getting the Phillies ahead first was Schwarber, who belted solo home runs in both the first and 3rd innings to make it 2-0 Phillies. In the 4th inning, the Phillies tacked on more runs, with a sac fly from Realmuto and an RBI single from Alec Bohm, opening up the game and making it a 4-0 lead for the Phillies.

In the 5th inning, JT Realmuto made it a 6-0 game, hitting a two run home run to right field with Darick Hall on base. In the 6th inning, a two run single off the bat of Castellanos, an RBI single from Hall, and another two run single, this time from Bohm, made it a 11-0 score, which would hold for the rest of the game.

Schwarber said after the game that "Everyone is starting to figure each other out. There are a lot of new faces in here this year. We’re all getting closer as a group. The wins were going to come at some point. We didn’t get off to the start that we wanted to. We wish that we got off to a better start, but it’s the reality of the situation. We didn’t."

Getting the start for the Phillies was Cristopher Sanchez, who picked up the win. Sanchez delivered 5 shutout innings, allowing just 4 baserunners. After Sanchez departed, Jeurys Familia and Andrew Bellatti each had scoreless innings of work, with Mark Appel delivering the final two innings.

Paolo Espino started for the Nationals and got hammered, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits in just 3 2/3 innings of work. After that, a chorus of bullpen arms pieced the game together, with Andres Machado, Erasmo Ramirez, Reed Garrett, and Jordan Weems pitching, with shortstop Alcides Escobar also throwing an inning.

Espino said after the game that "It's just the way pitching goes sometimes. Two back-to-back outings where it hasn't been going my way, but I feel OK. I feel fine. I'm still executing some good pitches, but I'm also making some mistakes. That's just how baseball goes, it's up and down."

Up next, the Phillies and Nationals continue their series on Wednesday night. Aaron Nola goes for the Phillies, while the Nationals send rookie Josiah Gray to the mound.
