One day before the trade deadline, we have our second major blockbuster trade. The San Diego Padres have acquired LHP Josh Hader from the Milwaukee Brewers in exchange for LHP Taylor Rogers, RHP Dinelson Lamet, OF Esteury Ruiz, and LHP Robert Gasser, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.

There had been buzz picking up in league circles that the Brewers were listening to offers for their all star closer, rumors that had also been swirling in previous seasons. Now, he's actually out the door. Hader is on an $11 million salary this season, and is owed $15 million next season, and is a pending free agent after the 2023 season.

So far this season, Hader is once again having a great year, posting a 1-4 record with a 1.11 WHIP and 4.24 ERA, notching a league leading 29 saves in 37 appearances, totaling 34 innings this season. Hader was selected to the NL All Star team this season, his second season in a row.

In his career, spanning 6 seasons with the Brewers, Hader has a 2.48 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP, throwing 316 1/3 innings while racking up 125 saves in 269 appearances. Hader has a 1.88 ERA and 0.83 WHIP, picking up one save in 11 career appearances. Hader has been selected to 4 NL All Star teams, going in 2018, 2019, 2021, and 2022. His season high for saves was 37 in 2019, which he might break this year.

The biggest name of the return for the Brewers is Rogers, who was acquired by the Padres from the Minnesota Twins just prior to opening day, and was serving as the Padres closer. This season, Rogers has a 4.35 ERA and 1.11 WHIP, notching 28 saves in 41 1/3 innings across 42 relief appearances.

The other major league return piece for the Brewers is Lamet, a righty who can either start or come out of the bullpen. Lamet has a 0-1 record with a 9.49 ERA and 2.02 WHIP, striking out 16 hitters while walking 9 in 12 1/3 innings so far this season, spanning 13 relief appearances, bouncing between San Diego and Triple A El Paso.

Another part of the return is Gasser, the 7th ranked prospect in the Padres system according to MLB Pipeline. With High A Fort Wayne this season, Gasser has a 4-9 record with a 4.18 ERA and 1.26 WHIP, throwing 90 1/3 innings in 18 starts in his first full season of pro ball since being drafted in 2021.

The final piece of the package for the Brewers is Ruiz, the 28th ranked prospect in the Padres system. Ruiz has made his MLB debut this season, hitting for a .222 average with a .556 OPS, with two extra base hits and two RBI's in 27 at bats, spanning 14 games for the Padres this season.

Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns said in a statement that "The players we are receiving in this trade help ensure that the future of the Milwaukee Brewers remains bright while not compromising our desire and expectation to win today. This mix of present major-league talent and high-level prospects furthers our aim to get as many bites of the apple as possible, and ultimately, to bring a World Series to Milwaukee."

For the Padres, they get Hader, a clear upgrade at closer who certainly deepens the bullpen as they look to make serious noise in the postseason. For the Brewers, either Rogers or Devin Williams can close games for them, with the other being a setup man. Lamet will likely come out of the bullpen in Milwaukee, and Ruiz and Gasser figure to be assigned to different Brewers minor league teams when they are activated.
