This offense almost fell victim to a perfect game, but then they woke up. Ty France brought in two runs, Julio Rodriguez homered, and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Los Angeles Angels with a 8-2 victory on Tuesday night in Los Angeles.

With the Angels working a perfect game in the 6th inning, the Mariners offense showed up a little late, but it was still enough to get the job done in convincing fashion. They picked up their second straight win and 6th in their last 10, also picking up a series win against the Angels in the process. The Mariners now have a 64-54 record this season.

Mariners starter Robbie Ray said that "At some point, our offense had to break through. Lately, it's been later in the game. We're not really looking at the standings, not looking forward to playoffs or whatever. Our focus needs to be on winning the next game."

Luis Rengifo got the Angels on the board first, hitting a first inning solo home run to make it a 1-0 game. Two innings later, David Fletcher came around to score on an RBI single from Rengifo, doubling the lead to 2-0 after 3 innings of play.

Once the 6th inning came around, the Mariners showed up. France got it started, scoring Adam Frazier and Sam Haggerty with a two run single to tie the game 2-2. Jesse Winker then hit a sac fly to put the Mariners ahead 3-2. In the 9th inning, Frazier hit a two run triple, Haggerty hit an RBI single, and Rodriguez hit a two run home run to make it a 8-2 final score.

Frazier said after the game that "We know what we’ve got to do night in and night out. The tension on defense is there. The pitchers, we’ve got a really good bullpen and really good starters, so we know we’re going to be in the game. We just try to stay focused and keep knocking on the door and keep putting pressure on them."

Starting for the Mariners was Ray, who got the win after allowing two runs on 6 hits, striking out 10 hitters in 6 innings. Andres Munoz came on and pitched a scoreless 7th inning, followed by one inning apiece from Matthew Festa and Erik Swanson to seal the game.

The starter in this one for the Angels was Jose Suarez, who had a perfect game bid going. Suarez ended up allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, picking up 5 strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Jimmy Herget was first out of the bullpen, pitching 2 2/3 shutout innings. Jesse Chavez then came on for the 9th inning, being charged with 5 runs.

Suarez said of his perfect game bid that "I knew I was throwing a perfect game, but I wasn't paying attention to that. I was focused on throwing my game. But that's why they have a bat and are professional baseball players. They can hit. I can't control that. That's part of the game."

Up next, the Mariners and Angels conclude their series on Wednesday afternoon, with George Kirby drawing the start for the Mariners, and Touki Toussaint starting for the Angels.
