Needing an upgrade at first base, the Boston Red Sox hit the west coast. The Red Sox have acquired 1B Eric Hosmer, SS/2B Max Ferguson, OF Corey Rosier, and cash considerations from the San Diego Padres in exchange for LHP Jay Groome, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

With Franchy Cordero and Bobby Dalbec struggling at first base, particularly defensively, the Red Sox made a move to get Hosmer, who is a 4 time gold glover at first. He was supposed to be going to the Washington Nationals in the Juan Soto blockbuster, but rejected the deal as the Nationals were on his no trade list.

So far for the Padres this season, Hosmer is hitting for a .272 batting average with a .391 slugging percentage and .727 OPS. He has hit 8 home runs to go with 40 RBI's, drawing 33 walks in 90 games this season.

Across Hosmer's 12 seasons, which include an All Star game appearance and a World Series title, Hosmer has a .277 batting average and .765 OPS, hitting 196 home runs to go with 875 RBI's, stealing 76 bases in 1,644 games. Hosmer has a .257 batting average with 4 home runs and 33 RBI's in 37 career playoff games.

Also coming to the Red Sox is Ferguson, the 11th ranked prospect in the Padres system, according to MLB Pipeline. With Low A Lake Elsinore and High A Fort Wayne this season, Ferguson has a .365 batting average and .723 OPS, hitting 6 home runs with 50 RBI's in 91 games.

The Red Sox also acquired Rosier, who is the 26th ranked prospect in the Padres system. With High A Fort Wayne this season, Rosier has a .263 batting average with a .396 slugging percentage and .777 OPS, hitting 6 home runs to go with 37 RBI's and 33 stolen bases in 85 games.

The only piece coming back to San Diego is Groome, a former first round pick who is the 11th ranked prospect in the Red Sox system. With Double A Portland and Triple A Worcester this season, Groome has a 4-5 record with a 3.59 ERA and 1.29 WHIP, throwing 92 2/3 innings across 17 starts and two relief appearances for Groome.

By acquiring Hosmer, the Red Sox fill their first base void, with Hosmer being the everyday first baseman with Dalbec now his backup. They also get a pair of solid prospects while only parting with one, with Groome likely to be assigned to Triple A El Paso.
