In contention, out of contention, it doesn't matter, Mike Trout will be elite. Trout set a franchise record, Jo Adell blasted two home runs, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Toronto Blue Jays with a 12-0 shutout victory on Friday night in Toronto.

The Angels have only won two of their last 10 games, but this win was not an insignificant one for them. The spotlight was on Trout this game. With a home run in the 8th inning, Trout set the Angels franchise record for runs scored, picking up number 1,025. He was previously tied with Garret Anderson for the record.

Trout needed just 1,374 games to break the record, where Anderson played in 2,013 games. It's the second team record Trout owns, and first since passing Tim Salmon for the Angels home run record during the 2020 season. He has 8 years left on his contract, with many records in store.

Angels interim manager Phil Nevin said of Trout that "We’ve had a lot of great hitters in this franchise, and obviously Mike’s going to go down as the best. He’s still got a lot of years left and he’s going to add to all his numbers, and he’s going to be at the top of all of them, I’m sure."

David Fletcher got the scoring started in the second inning, ripping a two run double to put the Angels ahead 2-0. Shohei Ohtani followed that up with a two run triple, and Luis Rengio added an RBI single, making it a 5-0 game after two innings. Andrew Velazquez added a two run home run in the 3rd, putting the Angels up by a 7-0 score.

The offense went quiet for a little while after that. In the 7th, Adell re-ignited it, hitting a solo home run to make the lead 8-0. In the 8th, Trout hit a two run home run to right field, setting the runs scored record and making it 10-0 in the process. Adell added his second home run, a two run shot in the 9th, making it a 12-0 win.

Adell said of his two homer game that "I’ve struggled in the past couple of games or so. And I’m really trying to stay in my zone and look for my pitches. But coming out tonight and being able to produce, help us win, putting that up on the board, it’s good stuff for me."

Rookie Reid Detmers was on the hill for the Angels in this one. Detmers allowed 4 hits and 3 walks, throwing 5 1/3 shutout innings. Andrew Wantz finished the 6th for Detmers. Jose Marte, Gerardo Reyes, and Jesse Chavez each threw an inning to seal the win after that.

Mitch White got the start and got rocked for the Blue Jays. White was tagged for 7 runs on 8 hits and 3 walks, lasting 5 innings. Yusei Kikuchi threw the next 3 innings, allowing 3 runs in that time. Infielder Whit Merrifield pitched the 9th inning and gave up two runs.

When asked about the loss, Blue Jays interim manager John Schneider said that "I think you flush it. It’s one bad day out of the last eight, and you move on to tomorrow. It was not our best brand of baseball today, and that’s all right. We’ve been rolling pretty good. You just move on to the next day."

Up next, the Angels and Blue Jays continue their series on Saturday afternoon. The Angels send Ohtani to the mound as he gets the start, while Alek Manoah starts for the Blue Jays.
