Needing a win over the weekend, the San Diego Padres got an injection of Java Joe. Ha-Seong Kim drove in a run, Luis Campusano homered, and the Padres defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks with a 2-0 shutout victory on Saturday night in Phoenix.

On Thursday night, the Padres dropped the series opener. They have since responded, picking up their second straight win on Saturday, and have a chance to win the series on Sunday. A big reason why was the performance of Joe Musgrove, working 6 brilliant innings to help the Padres win.

Padres manager Bob Melvin said of Musgrove's game that "We’ve seen a bunch of games this year like that. But after getting through a tough stretch, to be able to give us six like he did, didn’t walk anybody, had great command of all his pitches today, bottom of the zone, top of the zone. It’s good to see him come back and win a huge game like it was today."

The lone scoring by the Padres was in the 4th inning of this one. Kim started the scoring, flying out to center fielder Alek Thomas. That was deep enough to score Jake Cronenworth and give the Padres a 1-0 lead. The next batter was Campusano, who hit a solo home run to center field, doubling the Padres lead to a 2-0 mark.

Musgrove got the start and shined for the Padres. He got the win, allowing just 4 hits while striking out 8 hitters in 6 shutout innings. Nick Martinez then came on and pitched two shutout innings, and Josh Hader picked up his 33rd save with a scoreless 9th inning.

Cronenworth weighed in on Musgrove's start, saying that "He’s out there competing his butt off and giving us a chance to win. Tonight, it seemed like he was cruising pretty good. And then they got some baserunners there, but he worked around them pretty well."

Getting the start for the D-Backs was Zac Gallen, who took his first loss since June. Gallen allowed two runs on 4 hits and 3 walks over 5 1/3 innings. Caleb Smith came on and worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings, with Mark Melancon throwing a scoreless 9th inning..

Gallen said of his start that "It was more of a grinder outing, really. My timing wasn't right, just didn't feel super comfortable out there. I was just having trouble getting into a rhythm out there. They were taking a lot of pitches and I just didn't have the greatest command, but I made do with what I had out there."

Up next, the Padres and D-Backs conclude their series on Sunday afternoon. The Padres go for a series win with Yu Darvish on the mound, while Ryne Nelson starts for the D-Backs as they go for a series split.
