No one has been better proven recently to be locking up their young core than the Big A. The Atlanta Braves and RHP Spencer Strider have agreed to a 6 year, $75 million contract, according to an announcement by the Braves.

The deal keeps Strider in Atlanta until the end of the 2028 season, and there is a $22 million team option for 2029, with a $5 million buyout. He'll make $1 million in 2023 and 2024 and $4 million in 2025. That jumps up to $20 million in 2026, and $22 million in the 2027 and 2028 seasons.

Strider said of his extension that "My goal is always to outperform any expectations. There's nobody that has higher aspirations or expectations for performance than myself. And so in that way, I don't feel any pressure. The expectation is that I outperform any contract I ever sign."

This season with the Braves has been the first full season in the majors for Strider after briefly appearing in 2021. Strider enters the playoffs with a 11-5 record to go with a 2.67 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 1.83 FIP. He has made noise with 202 strikeouts in 131 2/3 innings pitched, split between 20 starts and 11 relief appearances.

Strider's 202 strikeouts mark a little bit of Braves history. He becomes the first Braves rookie to record a 200 strikeout season in the modern era. In MLB history, Strider became the first pitcher to strike out 200 or more hitters while allowing fewer than 100 hits, with Strider having allowed 86 in the regular season.

With the news of Strider's extension, the Braves have their young core locked up for a long time. Strider joins Ronald Acuna Jr, Ozzie Albies, Michael Harris II, Austin Riley, and Matt Olson as Braves extended for a long time to come.
