Series tied 1-1
The series was starting out perfectly for Philadelphia, until it wasn't. Josh Bell drove in a pair of runs, Brandon Drury added 3 RBI's, and the San Diego Padres rallied to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies with an 8-5 victory on Wednesday afternoon in San Diego.

Yeah, the Padres were down, but they weren't out. They wouldn't let that happen. Trailing 4-0, they scored 8 straight runs before the Phillies finally got another one, picking up the win to tie the series at a game apiece before heading to Philadelphia for the next 3 games of the set.

Drury said he felt the Padres were back. "I felt it when J.B. hit the homer. Obviously to get one run back is huge. And I was happy to get that run back, as well. But when J.B. hit the homer and made it a two-run game just like that, I was like: 'Oh man, we're right back in this.'"

In the top of the second, Bryce Harper scored on a single from Alec Bohm to put the Phillies ahead 1-0. Matt Vierling doubled in a run, Edmundo Sosa singled in a run, and Kyle Schwarber grounded out to score a run and make it a 4-0 game. In the bottom of the second, Drury and Bell answered with back to back solo homers to make the score 4-2.

Austin Nola kept the scoring going in the 5th with an RBI single to make it 4-3. Juan Soto then tied the game with a double to make it 4-4. Drury then put the Padres ahead 6-4 with a two run single, and Bell added an RBI single of his own to make it a 7-4 Padres lead. Manny Machado hit a solo homer for the Padres, and Rhys Hoskins hit one for the Phillies, making it an 8-5 score.

Padres starter Joe Musgrove said of Soto's hit that "I think he’s the type of person who thrives in these moments, who wants these moments, who wants the attention on him. He’s produced and earned that right. He’s a guy who wants that moment more than a guy who shies away from it. You get a consistent personality, consistent energy from him. Whether he’s doing well or poor, I think, he knows what he brings to the table."

Blake Snell started for the Padres, getting the win after allowing 4 runs on 5 hits in 5 innings pitched. Nick Martinez was first out of the bullpen and threw two shutout innings, before Robert Suarez pitched the 8th inning. Josh Hader got the save in the 9th, his 4th of the postseason.

It was Austin Nola's brother Aaron Nola on the mound for the Phillies, who was charged with 6 runs on 7 hits in 4 2/3 innings. Brad Hand couldn't get an out in his appearance, before Andrew Bellatti finished the 5th. Connor Brogdon, David Robertson, and Kyle Gibson also pitched for the Phillies.

Phillies outfielder Kyle Schwarber said of splitting the first two games that it's "Definitely not the best case, but not the worst case. But it’s still pretty good. We took away the home-field advantage part of it. So now it’s even. We’ll see who can win three games first. We’re excited to get back to Philly."

Up next, game 3 of the series is on Friday night as the series shifts to Philadelphia. Both teams will look to take a 2-1 series lead, with Musgrove starting for the Padres, and Ranger Suarez on the mound for the Phillies.
