Series tied 1-1
It was a showdown in Chavez ravine, and the underdogs took over. Manny Machado homered and drove in two runs, Jake Cronenworth homered, and the San Diego Padres defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 5-3 victory on Wednesday night in Los Angeles.

After dropping the series opener, the Padres came back determined, and pulled ahead to secure the win. They've avoided a sweep at the bare minimum, and have some momentum heading home for two games. Machado and Cronenworth were the lead causes behind the Padres win, with 3 combined RBI's.

Padres outfielder Jurickson Profar said after the game that "“During the season, we played a lot of close games like that, and it seemed like we were always losing those games. Tonight, it feels good that we won, and it gives us confidence going back home."

The top of the first saw Machado start the scoring with a solo home run to left field to make it 1-0 Padres. Freddie Freeman got the Dodgers on the board with a solo shot in the bottom of the first, tying the game 1-1. The second inning saw Max Muncy give the Dodgers a 2-1 lead, thanks to a solo homer of his own.

In the top of the 3rd, the Padres took a 3-2 lead on a double from Machado and a groundout from Jake Cronenworth. Trea Turner tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the 3rd with a solo home run to left field. The Padres took a 4-3 lead in the 6th on a Profar RBI single. Cronenworth blasted a homer in the 8th to make it a 5-3 score.

Machado said of the win that "We're going to compete. Ultimately, at the end of the day, we know that they're the division champs. They own the best record in baseball. They've played very well against us all year, but at the end of the day, we're going to go out there and compete, and we're going to go out there and leave it on the field. We're going to try to do everything possible to help our team win every single day. That's what we started in New York, and we're going to continue to do that until we're not."

Yu Darvish started and got the win for the Padres, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits in 5 innings. Robert Suarez came on and delivered two important shutout innings of work. Nick Martinez got two outs in the 8th, and Josh Hader got the final 4 outs to get the save.

Clayton Kershaw took the mound in his start, charged with 3 runs on 6 hits in 5 innings pitched. Brusdar Graterol and Blake Treinen allowed one run each, while Yency Almonte and Tommy Kahnle pitched scoreless innings.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of the loss that "We weren't clean. There were a couple of opportunities, two innings back to back, that we had an opportunity situationally to push a run across to tie the game, let alone potentially take the lead, and we couldn’t do that. Defensively, it just wasn’t clean, either."

Up next, the series shifts to San Diego for games 3 and 4, with game 3 on Friday night. Blake Snell got the start for the Padres, while Tony Gonsolin goes for the Dodgers.
