New York leads series 1-0
It once again appears that the New York Yankees are winning games. Anthony Rizzo homered, Harrison Bader added a homer, and the Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians with a 4-1 victory on Tuesday night in New York.

The Guardians entered on a high note after sweeping the Tampa Bay Rays in the wild card round. That didn't stop the Yankees from starting their October slate right, coming in after a first round bye. Long balls from Rizzo and Bader powered the Yankees in the win.

After the first two innings went scoreless, the Guardians started the scoring. In the top half of the 3rd, Steven Kwan rocked a solo home run down the right field line, finding the seats to give Cleveland a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the 3rd, Bader tied the game for the Yankees, making it a 1-1 score with a solo shot to left center field.

The 4th inning was scoreless before the Yankees crossed home plate again. It was Jose Trevino who drove in the run, hitting a sac fly to score Isiah Kiner-Falefa and make it a 2-1 Yankees lead. One inning later, in the 6th, Rizzo uncorked a two run home run to center field, making the Yankees lead a 4-1 margin.

It was Gerrit Cole starting the series opener for the Yankees, allowing one run on 4 hits in 6 1/3 innings, striking out 8 hitters. Jonathan Loaisiga finished the 7th inning, before Wandy Peralta worked 1 1/3 innings. Clay Holmes got the last two outs in the 9th to seal the win.

Cole said of his start in front of the Yankee stadium crowd that "It was very special for me. The game’s not over, so it’s not the most comfortable time to acknowledge the crowd, but I certainly felt it and appreciated it. I thought they were in every pitch tonight. What a wonderful experience to have them behind us."

Cal Quantrill got the start for the Guardians, charged with 4 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks, throwing 5 innings. A trio of relievers held the Yankees scoreless after that, with Trevor Stephan, Enyel De Los Santos, and James Karinchak throwing shutout innings.

Quantrill said of his start that he "Probably put myself in a couple counts I didn’t need to. But on the whole, I thought we threw the ball all right. Again, those big moments, guys on, you gotta find a way to get that guy out and give the team a chance to win. It was going to be hard to score runs today no matter what. I just didn’t keep us in it there at the end."

Up next, game two of the series is on Thursday after an off day. Shane Bieber starts for the Guardians as they look to tie the series, while Nestor Cortes Jr starts for the Yankees.
