New York wins series 3-2
They got a small scare, but in the end, the predictable outcome occurred. Giancarlo Stanton homered, Aaron Judge homered, and the New York Yankees defeated the Cleveland Guardians with a 5-1 victory on Tuesday afternoon in the Bronx.

After finding themselves in a 2-1 series deficit, the Yankees won game 4 in Cleveland, and game 5 at home to take a 3-2 series win. They did it thanks to homers from their two sluggers, Stanton and Judge. Now, they'll face the Houston Astros in the ALCS for the 3rd time in 6 years.

Judge said of the matchup with Houston that "My ultimate goal is to go out there and win a World Series, and that’s a team that’s kind of always been in the way. They got a great ballclub over there, so you kind of got to go through Houston to get to your ultimate goal of winning a World Series. So I’m looking forward to it. It’s going to be a great matchup, and we’re going to have some fun."

Stanton started the Yankees off on the right foot. In the first inning, he took a pitch and drove it to right field, finding the bleachers for a 3 run home run to make it 3-0 Yankees early on in game 5. One inning later, it was time for Judge to do the same, hitting a solo shot to center field to make the score 4-0.

In the 3rd inning, it was Jose Ramirez who got the Guardians on the board. He flew out to center field, but it was deep enough to score Austin Hedges to make it a 4-1 game. In the 5th inning, Anthony Rizzo got that run back for the Yankees, hitting an RBI single to score Gleyber Torres and make the score 5-1 in favor of the Yankees.

After the game, Stanton said of the win that "We threw the first punch and we had them chasing us the whole game. Luckily enough, we were able to stay on top. The fans have been riled up. They have been riled up since yesterday. It’s awesome, and they are still here for us."

Starting for the Yankees was Nestor Cortes, on short rest after starting game two. Cortes picked up the win, allowing one run on 3 hits in 5 innings of work. Jonathan Loaisiga came on and threw two shutout innings, with Clay Holmes and Wandy Peralta adding a shutout inning of their own to seal the win.

It was Aaron Civale starting for Cleveland, who got just one out in the first inning while giving up 3 runs. Sam Hentges was first out of the bullpen with 1 2/3 innings. Trevor Stephan and James Karinchak each threw 2 1/3 innings, and Emmanuel Clase added 1 1/3 innings of his own.

Guardians manager Terry Francona said of the season ending that "I know they are hurting right now. This needs to be a starting place for us. This can't just be a good story this year. We need to take this and go, because I think we have a chance to have something really special."

Up next, the Yankees take on the Astros in game one of the ALCS on Wednesday night in Houston, with Jameson Taillon starting the series opener. The Guardians head home for the winter and wonder what to do heading into 2023.
