The other Los Angeles team took a quick freeway trip to add to their rotation. The Los Angeles Angels and LHP Tyler Anderson have agreed to a 3 year, $39 million deal, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. The Angels confirmed the signing.

Angels GM Perry Minasian said of Anderson that "We’re obviously excited to add this caliber of starter to the rotation. We feel like we’re going in a positive direction as an organization. I'd like to thank ownership for allowing me to pursue it, being a three-year commitment. But we love the person. We love the competitor. We love the guy. We think he's exactly what we're looking for, not only his talent, but the makeup and bringing that type of competitiveness."

Last season, Angels starting pitchers combined to post the 6th best ERA in the majors, so the rotation wasn't a big need. Regardless, the signing of Anderson does make it better. He had the qualifying offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers, so the Angels will forfeit a draft pick by signing Anderson. He ultimately chose the 3 year deal for a lower annual salary over a one year deal worth almost $20 million with the Dodgers.

2022 was a career year for Anderson, who made his first all star game. He ended the season with a 15-5 record to go with a 2.57 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and 3.31 FIP, tossing 178 2/3 innings across 28 starts and two relief appearances. Anderson pitched 5 shutout innings in one playoff start last season.

Anderson has 7 MLB seasons with 5 different teams under his belt. He has a career 4.16 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 4.18 FIP, throwing 802 1/3 innings across 141 starts and another 6 relief appearances. In the playoffs, Anderson has 12 innings to his name, pitching to a 2.25 ERA and 1.00 WHIP in two starts and one relief appearance.

Prior to 2022, Anderson had struggled with consistency since being chosen in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies. But when he joined the Dodgers, he changed the grip on his changeup. That, combined with being healthy all season, led to his best season in the majors to date.

Minasian said of Anderson's 2022 that "He dominated from start to finish, made the All-Star team, pitched in the postseason extremely well against San Diego. This guy was a first-round pick and was highly touted throughout the Major Leagues, so he's had a lot of attention his whole career. He did things last year that improved his results, like the development of his changeup and using different arm slots against righties and lefties."

Anderson will join two way phenom Shohei Ohtani at the top of the Angels rotation, which will be a 6 man unit once again in 2023. Patrick Sandoval, Reid Detmers, and Jose Suarez are likely to break camp in the rotation, with Tucker Davidson and Griffin Canning among the competitors for the final spot.
