Dodgers add Syndergaard to rotation

If you need to upgrade your rotation, it's not a bad idea to go after someone who is nicknamed after a superhero. The Los Angeles Dodgers and RHP Noah Syndergaard have agreed to a one year, $13 million deal, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post. The Dodgers have confirmed.

The man known as Thor also gets an additional $1.5 million in bonuses in his contract. Last season was his first full season since Tommy John Surgery took him down in 2020, and after reaching the free agent market for the second year in a row, he's been scooped up by the Dodgers, who have a reputation for turning around players who need a spark.

Syndergaard said of the Dodgers that "I feel like everything that they touch turns to gold. This is a pretty surreal moment. It’s been my dream ever since I was first introduced to Dodger Stadium. I just feel really fortunate and blessed to play for such a great organization."

Last season for Syndergaard was spent between the Los Angeles Angels and Philadelphia Phillies. He posted a 3.94 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 3.83 FIP, throwing 134 2/3 innings across 24 starts and one relief appearance. He made two starts and two relief appearances in the playoffs for the Phillies.

Across 7 seasons with the New York Mets, Angels, and Phillies, Syndergaard has authored a 1.18 WHIP, 3.07 FIP, and 3.42 ERA. He has made 144 starts and two relief appearances, totaling 852 2/3 innings pitched. In the postseason, Syndergaard has a 2.62 ERA over 34 1/3 innings pitched, making 6 starts out of 9 total appearances.

The Dodgers were in search of arms to add to the rotation, especially with Andrew Heaney and Tyler Anderson departing to other teams. They brought back Kershaw, but with Trevor Bauer still suspended, they had a hole remaining, which is now filled by Syndergaard.

Syndergaard had previously routinely reached triple digits with his fastball, but refined his approach last season after coming back from Tommy John Surgery. He averaged 93-94 miles an hour on his fastball, but Syndergaard is hoping he can get back to upper 90's, and even triple digits, with his fastball in a Dodgers uniform.

As things currently stand, Syndergaard joins a Dodgers rotation that includes Kershaw, Julio Urias, Dustin May, and Tony Gonsolin, with Walker Buehler likely out for the season due to Tommy John Surgery.
