You can cross an item off the checklist in the Charm City. The Baltimore Orioles have acquired C James McCann and cash considerations from the New York Mets in exchange for a player to be named later, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. Both teams have confirmed the trade.

The Mets recently signed catcher Omar Narvaez, along with having Tomas Nido on the roster, which made McCann expendable. He was then dealt to the Orioles, who will only pay $5 million of the $24 million left on McCann's deal, with the Mets covering the rest of the salary. McCann is under contract through the 2024 season.

Due to a hamate bone fracture and a left oblique strain, McCann was limited to just 61 games in 2022 for the Mets, his second season in Queens. He managed a .195 batting average with a .257 on base percentage, adding 3 home runs and 18 RBI's over the 61 games he played in.

McCann's best offensive season came with the Chicago White Sox in 2019. He earned an AL All Star Team selection thanks to a .273 batting average and .789 OPS, hitting 18 home runs over 118 games that year. He had another strong season in the short 2020 year before signing with the Mets.

McCann has 9 major league seasons under his belt, split between the White Sox, Mets, and Detroit Tigers. In that time, he has a .243 batting average, .380 slugging percentage, and .296 on base percentage, adding 316 RBI's and 78 home runs in 783 games played. He has 7 plate appearances in the playoffs, managing just one hit.

In Baltimore, McCann will serve as the backup catcher behind Adley Rutschman, although he figures to see action against lefties more often than not. McCann has a .258 average with a .325 on base percentage against left handed pitching, as opposed to a .237 average and .284 on base percentage against right handers. He is also able to draw starts at DH and potentially first base.

The addition of McCann is the latest for the Orioles. They've brought in a utility infielder/outfielder in the person of Adam Frazier, Kyle Gibson to aid the rotation, and Mychal Givens to supplant the bullpen.
