Innings eaters are a priority in Western Missouri. The Kansas City Royals have agreed to a two year, $17 million deal with RHP Jordan Lyles, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The Royals have confirmed the news.

Kansas City will become the 8th team Lyles has played for as he enters year number 13 in his career. He'll play in the AL Central for the first time after suiting up for the Colorado Rockies, Houston Astros, Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Baltimore Orioles throughout his major league tenure.

Last season marked Lyles's only season with the Orioles. He wrapped up the season with a 1.39 WHIP, 4.40 FIP, and 4.42 ERA, striking out 144 hitters while eating up 179 innings out of the rotation, making 32 starts for the Orioles.

The signing of Lyles comes as a necessity for a young Royals rotation that has had it's struggles. In 2022, the rotation had an AL worst 4.76 ERA to go with just 6.91 strikeouts per 9 innings and 5.7 WAR. Lyles will certainly aid the Royals rotation, just as Zack Greinke did in 2022.

Lyles has logged lots of innings over his 12 year career. He has 1,326 1/3 innings pitched, recording a 5.10 ERA, 4.68 FIP, and 1.43 WHIP, making 214 starts and 107 relief appearances, striking out 1,022 hitters. Lyles has yet to pitch in the postseason in his major league career.

In addition to his ability to handle a big innings workload, the Royals were also attracted to Lyles's low walk rate in recent season. He averaged 2.6 walks per 9 innings in 2022, good for a 6.7 percent walk rate. In 2022, it was 2.8 walks per 9 innings. He also keeps the ball in the yard, allowing 1.3 home runs per 9 innings last season.

In the Royals rotation, Lyles and new acquisition Ryan Yarbrough will join a young pitching staff, with some combination of Brady Singer, Daniel Lynch, Kris Bubic, and Brad Keller in the rotation.
