Back to the Bay Area for a certain southpaw. The San Francisco Giants and LHP Sean Manaea have agreed to a two year, $25 million deal, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. The Giants have confirmed the signing.

Manaea entered free agency and to the Giants following a down year in 2022. He ended the season with a 4.53 FIP, 4.96 ERA, and 1.30 WHIP, tossing 156 innings while making 28 starts and two relief appearances in his only season with the San Diego Padres. He was acquired in a trade with the Oakland Athletics prior to the 2022 season.

The contract for Manaea has an opt out following the 2023 season, seemingly designed to try and rebuild Manaea's value. The Giants have recently revived the careers of Drew Pomeranz, Kevin Gausman, Drew Smyly, and Carlos Rodon, and the hope is Manaea can be the next.

Manaea started the season strong, but he had a 6.07 ERA in his final 19 showings in the regular season. He was relegated to long relief duty in the postseason, making just one appearance. That came in game 4 of the NLCS, giving up 5 runs in 1 1/3 innings against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Over his career, Manaea has one season in San Diego and 6 with the Oakland Athletics. In that time, he has a 1.22 WHIP, 4.06 ERA, and 4.07 FIP, making 156 starts and 3 appearances out of the bullpen, totaling 885 innings pitched. He has a 15.26 ERA and 2.09 WHIP in two starts and one relief appearance in the postseason, throwing 7 2/3 innings.

One hallmark of Manaea has been durability. In 5 of 6 full seasons, Manaea has thrown at least 144 innings and made 24 or more starts. His only injury history has been shoulder surgery that limited him to just 5 starts in 2019.

Mitch Haniger and Manaea have been the big signings of the offseason for the Giants, who also brought back Joc Pederson on the qualifying offer. Manaea is set to join a Giants rotation that includes Alex Wood, Logan Webb, Anthony DeSclafani, and Alex Cobb.
