A former inhabitant of the motor city is on his way back. The Detroit Tigers and LHP Matthew Boyd have agreed to a one year, $10 million deal, per ESPN's Jeff Passan. The Tigers have confirmed the signing.

Spending a year on the west coast, Boyd now returns to Detroit as the team searches for starting pitchers under new president of baseball operations Scott Harris. Boyd started for the Tigers on opening day in 2020, and was signed by Harris while he was in San Francisco, before eventually being traded to the Seattle Mariners.

Boyd was limited due to injury in 2022, but was effective for the Mariners when he did pitch. He ended the season with a 1.35 ERA, 3.19 FIP, and 0.98 WHIP, throwing 13 1/3 innings over 10 appearances out of the Seattle bullpen.

After the Tigers non-tendered Boyd following the 2021 season, he returns back to Detroit as they try to address their starting pitching depth. Prized pitching prospects Tarik Skubal and Casey Mize are set to miss significant time, with Mize recovering from Tommy John Surgery and Skubal working his way back from surgery on a flexor tendon.

Boyd has spent 8 seasons in the majors, split between the Toronto Blue Jays, Tigers, and Mariners. Over that time, he has a 1.32 WHIP, 4.66 FIP, and 4.90 ERA, striking out 772 hitters over 797 2/3 innings pitched, making 145 starts and 14 relief appearances.

The signing of Boyd likely puts him in the Tigers rotation for opening day. He'll join Eduardo Rodriguez and Matt Manning as entrenched pieces. Spencer Turnbull, Joey Wentz, and Beau Brieske are among the contenders for the final rotation spots.
