We have a player for player baseball trade on our hands. The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired SS/3B Miguel Rojas from the Miami Marlins in exchange for SS/2B Jacob Amaya, according to both clubs announcements.

The Dodgers trade for Rojas comes as a bit of a full circle moment, as he was traded alongside Dee Gordon and Dan Haren to the Marlins in 2014. He comes to the Dodgers with one year and $5 million left on a two year, $10 million contract signed last offseason.

Marlins GM Kim Ng said of dealing Rojas that "t's always difficult to trade a player like this, of that magnitude, what he meant to the team on the field as well as off the field. When I did talk to him, I first expressed my gratitude to him and again, going back to all the things that he's done for the organization, how long he's been here, that I'll always see him as somebody who's definitely a part of this fabric here."

Last season was Rojas's 8th with the Marlins. He had a down year due to playing through injuries. He ended the year with a .236 batting average and .605 OPS, hitting 6 home runs with 36 RBI's in 140 games played. Rojas is coming off offseason surgery and is expected to be ready for Spring Training.

Rojas comes to the Dodgers as an elite defender at shortstop. According to statcast, he ended last season in the 98th percentile for outs above average, becoming a gold glove finalist for the second time in his career. Rojas is expected to get playing time at shortstop, second base, and 3rd base for the Dodgers.

Coming back to the Marlins is Amaya, the 15th ranked prospect in the Dodgers farm system according to MLB Pipeline. He was regarded as the best infield defender in the system, and had walked as often as he struck out prior to 2022.

Starting the year at Double A Tulsa, Amaya earned a promotion to Triple A Oklahoma City, where he ended the season. He combined to have a .261 batting average and .795 OPS, adding 71 RBI's and 17 home runs in 133 games played, 84 of which were at Triple A.

Ng said of getting Amaya that "Jacob is a very interesting player. He's a plus defender. I think offensively, one of the things that was very attractive to us about him was his plate discipline, and his offensive game overall. This is something that we've been looking for. I think if you look at the last several infielders that we've acquired, it's a certain profile, and that is that they have in their past and we hope that they have in their future the ability to control the zone."
