A recent foe is now on his way to South Beach. The Miami Marlins and 2B/SS Jean Segura have agreed to a two year, $17 million deal, according to Hector Gomez of Z101 digital. The Marlins have confirmed.

Prior to the postseason last year, Segura was the leader among active MLB players for the most regular season games played without making the playoffs. That ended thanks to the Philadelphia Phillies making it, and Segura had some clutch moments in the NLCS.

Segura will make $6.5 million in 2023 and $8.5 million in 2024 as part of his contract. There is a $10 million option for the 2025 season that has a $2 million buyout attached to it. Segura is now off to the Marlins after spending time with one of their NL East rivals, that being the Phillies, since the 2019 season.

Last season was Segura's 4th in a Phillies uniform. He ended the season with a .277 batting average, .336 on base percentage, and .723 OPS, adding 10 home runs and 33 RBI's in 98 games played. He added 7 RBI's in 17 playoff games in the Phillies run to the World Series.

Segura has 11 seasons with 5 different teams under his belt. Making two All Star Games, he has amassed a .285 batting average, .408 slugging percentage, and .330 on base percentage, hitting 107 home runs with 492 RBI's, adding 205 stolen bases in 1,328 games played.

The Marlins lineup was a clear weak spot in 2022, finishing with the 3rd fewest runs scored in baseball. The hope is that Segura's ability to hit for contact and steal bases, he stole 13 last season, will help aid the lineup. Segura is the first major league signing of the offseason for the Marlins, who have seen 3 of their division rivals have big off seasons.

As things stand, Segura is likely to be the starting 3rd baseman for the Marlins come opening day. They have a surplus of infielders right now, with Joey Wendle, Miguel Rojas, Jazz Chisholm Jr, and Jordan Groshans in the mix for playing time.
