A pitcher on the mend now has some contract clarity. RHP Chris Paddack and the Minnesota Twins have agreed to a 3 year, $12.5 million deal, according to The Athletic's Dan Hayes. The deal is done and has been confirmed.

Just 5 starts into his Twins tenure, Paddack underwent Tommy John Surgery in May, ending his season. Due to the timing of the procedure, he is also expected to miss the strong majority, if not all of, the 2023 season as he recovers. He had previously agreed to a $2.4 million deal to avoid arbitration this winter.

Paddack's contract also has an additional $2.5 million available in bonuses that could push the deal to $15 million. The contract covers the remainder of his arbitration eligible seasons and delays free agency by one season. He will now hit free agency following the 2025 season, barring another contract.

The last full season for Paddack was in 2021, making 22 starts and one relief appearance for the San Diego Padres. Paddack posted a 1.27 WHIP, 3.78 FIP, and 5.07 ERA in 108 1/3 innings that season, striking out 99 hitters.

Just before opening day in 2022, Paddack was dealt to the Twins alongside Emilio Pagan in exchange for Taylor Rogers, Brent Rooker, and a player to be named later. Paddack had a 4.03 ERA, 1.72 FIP, and 1.21 WHIP, making 5 starts and throwing 22 1/3 innings before undergoing his second career Tommy John Surgery.

Paddack has 4 big league seasons under his belt, split between the Padres and Twins. Paddack has compiled a 4.20 ERA, 3.94 FIP, and 1.13 WHIP, throwing 330 1/3 innings while making 65 starts and one bullpen outing. Paddack has allowed 6 runs on 8 hits in 2 1/3 innings pitched in the postseason, which came in 2020.

Beyond 2023, Paddack and Bailey Ober are the only starting pitchers on the Twins under contract, with Sonny Gray, Tyler Mahle, and Kenta Maeda all scheduled to hit free agency after the 2023 season.
