The true north of baseball is continuing to add pitching. The Toronto Blue Jays and RHP Chad Green have agreed to a two year, $8.5 million deal, according to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet. Toronto has confirmed the addition.

Green's contract is an interesting one. He will make $2.25 million in 2023. The Blue Jays have team options for 2024 through 2027 for $27 million, 3 of which have $1 million in bonuses. If those options are declined, Green gets a player option for 2024 worth $6.5 million with another $2 million in bonuses. If Green declines his player option, the Blue Jays get a two year option for 2024 and 2025 worth $21 million, with $2 million in bonuses.

As things currently stand, Green is recovering from Tommy John Surgery that he underwent in June, which will likely keep him sidelined for all of 2023, though there is a possibility he could make a late season return, which would be important if the Blue Jays are in the playoff race come September.

Prior to the injury and surgery, Green was enjoying a fine season with the New York Yankees. He recorded a 1.20 WHIP, 2.85 FIP, and 3.00 ERA, appearing in 14 games out of the bullpen while throwing 15 innings and striking out 16 hitters.

Green has played all 7 seasons of his major league career with the Yankees and is now off to a division rival. Green has a 3.17 ERA, 3.29 FIP, and 1.02 WHIP, throwing 383 2/3 innings while appearing in 272 games, 24 of which were starts. Green has a 4.15 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in one start and 17 relief appearances in the playoffs, totaling 26 innings pitched.

The biggest weapon in Green's arsenal is his fastball, with high spin and high velocity to rack up a lot of strikeouts, including a 99 strikeout season in 2021. His fastball sits around 95 miles an hour and his curveball is a secondary offering, with Green also able to provide multi inning relief stints.

Green will join forces with Jordan Romano and Adam Cimber in the back end of the Blue Jays bullpen, with Erik Swanson also being added in the offseason, also able to log important innings when necessary.

So far this offseason, Swanson, Chris Bassitt, Daulton Varsho, Kevin Kiermaier, and now Green represent the new additions for the Blue Jays as they look to bounce back from a wild card round elimination in the 2022 playoffs.
