Moore signs multi year extension with Mariners

Utility players are just as important as regular position players. The Seattle Mariners and IF/OF Dylan Moore have agreed to a 3 year, $8.875 million contract extension, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN. The Mariners have confirmed.

The contract covers the final two seasons of Moore's arbitration eligibility and delays his free agency by one year. He is currently recovering from core surgery in the offseason after being sidelined last season with an oblique strain. He is expected to be ready for opening day at the end of March barring any setbacks.

Moore is coming off a rather productive year in 2022 with the Mariners. He ended the season with a .224 batting average, .385 slugging percentage, and .753 OPS, hitting 6 home runs with 24 RBI's and 21 stolen bases in 104 games.

With the Mariners entering 2023 with more outfield depth and some subtractions in the infield, Moore seems likely to get the majority of his playing time in the infield. The righty hitting Moore figures to be a solid backup option to JP Crawford at shortstop and Kolten Wong at second base, who are both lefty hitters.

However, Moore is one of the most versatile players in baseball, having played every position except catcher at least once in the majors. When Julio Rodriguez went down last season with injury, Moore filled in at center field, and started games at 6 different positions in 2022.

Moore has spent his entire big league career with the Mariners, which spans 4 seasons. In that time, he has accumulated a .208 batting average, .317 on base percentage, and .384 slugging percentage, bashing 35 home runs with 112 RBI's while stealing 65 bases in 381 games. Moore has one hit and one RBI in 9 plate appearances in the postseason.

The extension of Moore makes him the latest member of the Mariners to sign a multi year extension, joining Rodriguez, Crawford, Andres Munoz, Luis Castillo, and Marco Gonzales. The deal also leaves Teoscar Hernandez as the only remaining arbitration eligible player without a contract in Seattle.
