Fear not Padres fans, the future is no longer uncertain for this star. The San Diego Padres and 3B Manny Machado have agreed to a 11 year, $350 million contract extension, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan. The Padres have confirmed the news.

Prior to the 2019 season, Machado signed a 10 year deal worth $300 million with the Padres that included an opt out after 2023. Machado confirmed that he would opt out if a new extension was not agreed upon. His new deal begins this season and keeps him in San Diego through his age 41 season, with no opt outs and a full no trade clause included.

Machado enjoyed a spectacular season in the heart of the Padres order in 2022. He ended the season with a .298 batting average and .898 OPS, making the all star game with 32 home runs and 102 RBI's to go with 9 stolen bases in 150 games. He had 4 home runs and 7 RBI's in 12 playoff games last season.

The extension for Machado makes him the owner of the 3rd largest extension in baseball history, trailing only Mookie Betts with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Mike Trout with the Los Angeles Angels. Machado finished as the runner up for the 2022 NL MVP, which went to Paul Goldschmidt.

Machado has played for the Padres, Dodgers, and Baltimore Orioles in his 11 big league seasons. In that time, he has compiled a .282 batting average, .493 slugging percentage, and .341 on base percentage, blasting 283 home runs with 853 RBI's and 85 stolen bases in 1,445 games. He has a .221 batting average and .714 OPS with 10 home runs and 23 RBI's in 41 playoff games.

Throughout his career, Machado has been selected to the all star game 6 times, including consecutive appearances in 2015-2016 and 2021-2022. He has been in the top 3 in NL MVP voting 3 times since joining the Padres and was a key component of their run to the NLCS in 2022, their first NLCS appearance in 24 years.

Another hallmark of Machado has been his health, having avoided the injured list since the 2014 season. He's over halfway to the 500 home run and 3,000 hit milestones and will represent the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic once again in the 2023 rendition.

So far this offseason, the Padres have extended Machado and Yu Darvish while signing Xander Bogaerts, Nelson Cruz, Matt Carpenter, Adam Engel, and Seth Lugo in free agency. They also re-signed pitchers Robert Suarez and Nick Martinez as they look to make a run at the World Series this season.
