After they took care of one reliever, they're handling another. The Philadelphia Phillies and LHP Jose Alvarado have agreed to a 3 year contract extension, according to an announcement by the team on Friday.

In his new deal, Alvarado will earn $3.45 million in 2023 and $9 million in both 2024 and 2025. There is a $9 million team option for 2026 that includes a $500,000 buyout, and Alvarado also gets a $50,000 signing bonus. Alvarado was set to hit free agency following the end of the 2023 season but is now the 10th player under contract beyond 2023 for the Phillies.

Alvarado had a strong season in 2022, his second with the Phillies. He ended the season with a 3.18 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 1.92 FIP, picking up two saves in 59 relief appearances during the regular season, totaling 51 innings. He threw 11 1/3 innings in the playoffs over 12 appearances.

Prior to the 2021 season, Alvarado was acquired by the Phillies in a 3 team trade with the Tampa Bay Rays. Alvarado had control issues along with nagging elbow and shoulder injuries. That's now behind him, and he's become one of manager Rob Thomson's best relievers since landing with the Phillies.

That didn't start until around midseason in 2022. He posted a 7.62 ERA in his first 17 appearances, leading to the Phillies optioning him to Triple A Lehigh Valley in May. When he came back in June, he posted a 1.66 ERA in his final 42 appearances, striking out 64 hitters while walking 14 in 38 innings. His cutter produced a 55.7 whiff percentage, 9th highest in baseball among any qualifying pitch.

Alvarado has played for both the Phillies and Rays in his 6 year big league career. In that time, he has a 3.57 ERA, 3.19 FIP, and 1.36 WHIP, hurling 239 1/3 innings while picking up 22 saves in 272 appearances, with all but one coming in relief. In the playoffs, Alvarado has a 4.85 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 14 appearances, throwing 13 innings.

The Phillies have now extended both Alvarado and Seranthony Dominguez, two of the returning high leverage relievers. The Phillies have beefed up the bullpen with Craig Kimbrel, Matt Strahm, and Gregory Soto while also adding star shortstop Trea Turner.
