An ace is set to miss time yet again. Tampa Bay Rays RHP Tyler Glasnow has been diagnosed with a grade 2 left oblique strain and will be out for 6 to 8 weeks, according to an announcement by the team on Tuesday.

Glasnow threw a bullpen on Monday and sustained the injury 6 pitches into his session. He underwent an MRI that revealed the strain. He will be reevaluated in 10 days. This season is Glasnow's first year of a two year, $30.35 million contract extension, which runs through the 2024 season.

Last season, Glasnow made just two starts in the regular season and one in the playoffs after his recovery from Tommy John Surgery, allowing one run in 6 2/3 innings. In 2021, Glasnow had a 2.66 ERA and 2.77 FIP in 14 starts and 88 innings pitched prior to undergoing Tommy John Surgery.

Asked about the injury, Glasnow said that "It's not ideal. It definitely kind of sucks. but at this point, me being all sad about it doesn't really do anything. It is what it is regardless of my mentality, so I'm not really going to mope or anything. I'm just going to use this time to get really strong and hopefully I can address any sort of inefficiencies or use this time to figure out certain things about my body to try and minimize the chances of this happening again."

During his recovery from Tommy John, Glasnow had arthroscopic surgery on his right ankle in March of 2022. Prior to undergoing the surgery, Glasnow was one of baseball's best pitchers in 2021, striking out 123 batters in 88 innings. He was expected to be near the top of the Rays rotation come opening day.

With Glasnow sidelined, the Rays have Shane McClanahan, Jeffrey Springs, Drew Rasmussen, and Zach Eflin in the rotation. Luis Patino, Josh Fleming, Yonny Chirinos, and Taj Bradley are in the mix for the final rotation spot.
