There was a scary scene on Monday in Fort Myers. Boston Red Sox IF Justin Turner was hit in the face on a fastball from Detroit Tigers pitcher Matt Manning in the first inning of Monday's Spring Training game.

Immediately after he was hit, Turner went straight to the ground and could be seen bleeding while down. Red Sox athletic trainers tended to Turner and helped him off the field holding a towel to his face. He was transported via ambulance to an area hospital.

The Red Sox released a statement saying that "Justin Turner was taken to a local hospital after being hit in the face by a pitch. He is receiving treatment for soft tissue injuries and is being monitored for a concussion. He will undergo further testing, and we’ll update as we have more information. Justin is stable, alert and in good spirits given the circumstances."

Turner's wife Kourtney tweeted on Monday evening that Turner was discharged from the hospital after receiving 16 stitches. Tests came back clear and no fractures were found, with Turner avoiding a more serious head injury.

Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas said after the game that "Yeah, I was distraught for like, the first two innings honestly. As a baseball player, that's your biggest fear, for sure, running into a pitch like that coming up and in. It's a scary sight. And, it was like, hard drop, just like a pit-in-my-stomach feeling. I've gotten pretty close to him, being around him a lot, just trying to pick his brain. I know he's got a lot of experience. So hopefully he makes a speedy recovery."

After spending 9 seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Turner signed a one year, $15 million contract with the Red Sox in the offseason. He is expected to primarily serve as the DH, with the ability to play at 3rd base when Rafael Devers needs a day off or first when Casas needs a breather.
