Wainwright to miss time following groin strain

The longtime veteran is gonna be on the shelf. St. Louis Cardinals RHP Adam Wainwright will start the season on the injured list with a groin strain, according to manager Oli Marmol.

Marmol said in a press conference that "I don’t have a real timetable yet other than he strained his groin, but we all have an idea of what that typically means. We’ll continue to evaluate him over the next few days, but no timetable at the moment."

Wainwright reportedly suffered the injury prior to the World Baseball Classic championship game against Japan on Tuesday. Wainwright started two games for Team USA in the tournament. He was supposed to be the Cardinals opening day starter, but he's now on the shelf for the season opener in one week's time.

For candidates to replace Wainwright for the opening day starter, Marmol has Wainwright's Team USA teammate and RHP Miles Mikolas as an option, along with Jack Flaherty, looking to stay healthy after just 9 games in 2022 for the Cardinals. Mikolas started opening day in 2019, with Flaherty having received the nod in 2020 and 2021.

Wainwright plans to retire following the season, which will be his 18th season in the major leagues. He ended the season with an 11-12 record, the first full season he had a losing record in his career. He went 2-4 with a 6.69 ERA to end the season.

This season, Wainwright will try to surpass Jesse Haine's 210 wins for second place on the Cardinals all time wins leaderboard, trailing only Bob Gibson's 251 wins. He has 195 wins, needing 15 to tie and 16 to pass Haines.

In terms of a replacement in the rotation, Marmol singled out Jake Woodford as an option, while the team also has Dakota Hudson with Triple A Memphis.
