When a chance at an incredible achievement ends like that, it stings. Nico Hoerner had 4 RBI's, Patrick Wisdom homered, and the Chicago Cubs shut out the Los Angeles Dodgers 13-0 on Friday afternoon in Chicago.

The win goes down as the Cubs 5th in 6 games as they continue to have an impressive start to the season. Wisdom and Trey Mancini each drove in 3 runs for the Cubs, who also got home runs from 4 different hitters in the lineup.

Seiya Suzuki gave the Cubs an early 2-0 lead in the first, hitting a two run double to score Ian Happ and Dansby Swanson. In the second inning, a single from Hoerner scored Nick Madrigal to make it 3-0. In the 3rd inning, Cody Bellinger and Mancini hit back to back solo home runs to make it a 5-0 Cubs lead.

In the 5th inning, Wisdom opened up the Cubs lead even more with a 3 run home run to left field. Mancini then hit an RBI single to make it 9-0 before Hoerner blasted a 3 run shot of his own, making it 12-0 Cubs. Mancini drove in another run in the 6th inning with an RBI single, making the score 13-0 in favor of the Cubs.

Getting the start for the Cubs was Drew Smyly. He worked through the first 7 innings with a perfect game intact, but lost it in the 8th when Yan Gomes seemingly leapfrogged over him as they both tried to make a play on a ground ball. Smyly struck out 10 hitters over 7 2/3 innings to get the win.

Smyly said of his perfect game ending the way it did "It's a tough way to end it. You feel like you're really close and executed a good pitch. Good curveball, and he barely hit it. Capped it. It wasn't going to go foul. One of us had to make the play. I know Yan wanted it just as bad as I did."

Julio Urias got the start and the loss for the Dodgers, allowing 5 runs on 7 hits in 3 1/3 innings pitched. Jake Reed got the last outs of the 4th, getting tagged for 6 runs doing so. Andre Jackson allowed two runs in 3 innings, while position player Luke Williams had a scoreless inning.

Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said that "I think the easy answer is a loss is a loss. But it never feels good to get your butt kicked like this. I felt good last night after the win, and to come out today and get beat up doesn’t feel good. Still have an opportunity to win a game tomorrow. I expect our guys to come in and do that."

Up next, the series continues on Saturday afternoon. The Dodgers will send Dustin May to the hill, while the Cubs start Hayden Wesneski.
