Despite a slow start, these boys still have fight in them. Francisco Alvarez tied the game, Pete Alonso won the game, and the New York Mets rallied to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays 8-7 in 10 innings on Wednesday night in Queens.

The Mets improved to 21-23 with the win, just their 4th in 10 games. Though Alonso was the hero with his home run in the 10th inning, he wouldn't have had that chance if it weren't for Alvarez hitting the game tying home run.

New York manager Buck Showalter said after the game that "It’s painful to watch people you care about go through some of the things, and they'll be the first to tell you it's self-inflicted. So tonight they refused to roll over."

Isaac Paredes got the scoring started for the Rays in the 4th inning, hitting an RBI double to score Brandon Lowe and make it 1-0 Rays. It took until the 7th inning to score next, when Jose Siri hit a solo home run to double the lead to 2-0. In the bottom half of the inning, Mark Vientos hit the game tying two run home run to make the score 2-2.

Brandon Lowe hit a two run home run in the 8th to make it 4-2 Rays lead, and Randy Arozarena hit an RBI single in the top of the 9th to make it 5-2. In the bottom of the 9th, Alvarez forced extra innings to tie the game 5-5 and keep the game going. Harold Ramirez and Josh Lowe hit RBI singles in the top of the 10th to put the Rays ahead 7-5. Alonso then hit the walk off 3 run home run in the bottom of the inning, giving the Mets a dramatic win.

Alonso said of the win that "From pitch to pitch, inning to inning, there's never a doubt in our minds. We keep fighting every single day, every single pitch, every out. And that's all we can do, do the best we can and we'll see how it lays. But today, we did an amazing job fighting. We did an amazing job executing. This was an amazing team win."

It was Kodai Senga who got the start for the Mets, allowing one run on 3 hits and striking out 12 hitters over 6 innings pitched. Jeff Brigham allowed a run in one inning and Adam Ottavino was charged with two. Stephen Nogosek and David Robertson also allowed runs in the game.

Josh Fleming got the start for the Rays, delivering 5 scoreless innings. Kevin Kelly and Jake Diekman pitched the 6th before Ryan Thompson allowed two runs in the 7th inning. Colin Poche pitched the 8th before Jason Adam allowed 3 runs in the 9th. Pete Fairbanks got the loss in the 10th.

Fairbanks said of giving up the walk off homer that it was "A very unfortunate time to be the lesser Pete. I went in the cage and hit something as hard as that one was hit and processed it. Now it's time to get ready for tomorrow."

Up next, the series concludes on Thursday afternoon. Tylor Megill will get the start for the Mets, opposed by Taj Bradley of the Rays.
