Brewers ride longball to road win over Rays

The Rays getting out homered doesn't happen a lot. Willy Adames homered, William Contreras added a homer, and the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays with a 6-4 victory on Sunday afternoon in St. Petersburg.

In addition to Adames and Contreras, Rowdy Tellez also homered for the Brewers, who avoided a sweep with the win in the series finale. The Brewers are a pedestrian 5-5 in their last 10 games but still hold first place in the NL Central with a 25-21 record.

However, the main storyline was that of Adames. Sunday's game marked the two year anniversary of his trade to the Brewers, with the Brewers acquiring him and Trevor Richards from the Rays in exchange for Drew Rasmussen and JP Feyereisen. To cap it off, he homered on the anniversary, continuing to deliver for the Brewers.

Adames said of the moment after the game that "It's amazing. It’s ironic that today was two years from when I was traded and I hit a homer today and we got the win and we’re going back home. It felt good. It doesn’t feel like it’s been two years. It feels like it was just yesterday."

It was Adames who started the scoring in the second inning, blasting a solo home run to put the Brewers ahead 1-0 early on. It stayed like that until the top of the 4th, when Tellez cranked a two run home run to extend the lead to 3-0. Josh Lowe then tied it for the Rays in the bottom of the inning, hitting a 3 run home run to make it a 3-3 game.

Contreras resumed the scoring with a bang in the 5th inning. He put the Brewers ahead 5-3 thanks to a two run home run to center field. Later in the inning, Christian Yelich scored on an RBI single from Brian Anderson to make it a 6-3 game. Lowe hit an RBI single in the 8th inning to make it 6-4, but the Brewers held on from there.

Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said of Adames that "This game almost encourages you to live on a rollercoaster and encourages ups and downs because you get results thrown at you every single day, and we love to be around people that don't get affected by it. And that's what Willy's really good at. That smile that we see every day is a reason to feel good. And no matter what's going on, that's important. We certainly need offense from Willy. He's scuffled a little bit over the last couple weeks but he'll come out of it. He's a good hitter and he'll come out of it."

Getting the start for the Brewers was Freddy Peralta, who got the win with 3 runs allowed in 6 innings pitched. Joel Payamps worked a scoreless 7th before Peter Strzelecki got two outs in the 8th. Devin Williams got the final 4 outs to get the save, his 7th of the season.

Jalen Beeks got the start for the Rays, serving as an opener in this one, pitching the first two innings and allowing a run. Cooper Criswell got the loss, pitching the next 4 2/3 innings and allowing 5 runs. Jake Diekman and Zack Littell pitched after Criswell.

Up next, both teams are at home for their next series. The Brewers host the Houston Astros on Monday night, with Corbin Burnes starting. The Rays welcome the Toronto Blue Jays to town on Monday, with Trevor Kelley lined up to start.
