The Missouri boys got some stormin Gorman on Saturday. Willson Contreras drove in a run, Nolan Gorman homered, and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 on Saturday in St. Louis.

Facing a situation with the game tied late, Gorman provided all the fireworks, with his home run putting the Cardinals ahead for good. They've now won 7 of their last 10 games and are out of last place in the NL Central, now holding a 20-27 record.

Gorman said of his big hit that "Obviously, that’s the name of the game, you’ve got to get a good pitch to hit, and everyone is trying to do that when they’re in the box. Being able to be in a good position and being ready to hit when you get that good pitch, that’s really important. I obviously worked all offseason, so to be able to help these guys win, it’s fun to see and fun to do. I guess, overall, it’s gratifying, too."

Contreras started the scoring in the first inning, hitting an RBI single to put the Cardinals up 1-0 early. In the second inning, Alec Burleson hit an RBI double to make it 2-0 as Paul DeJong score. Lars Nootbaar then hit a sac fly to make it a 3-0 game. JD Martinez then tied it in one swing for the Dodgers, hitting a 3 run home run in the 6th inning to tie the score 3-3.

It remained that way until the 8th inning. That was when Gorman came up and made no mistake, drilling a 3 run home run to right field, putting the Cardinals ahead by a 6-3 score. In the 9th inning, Jason Heyward hit an RBI double and Will Smith drove in a run with a sac fly to make it 6-5, but the Cardinals stopped any further rally.

Getting the start for the Cardinals was Miles Mikolas, who got a no decision by allowing 3 runs on 6 hits in 7 innings. Ryan Helsley pitched the 8th and got the win. Giovanny Gallegos picked up his 4th save of the season in the 9th.

Mikolas said of his start that "If I can keep the ball down when it needs to be and elevate when it needs to be, that's the key. I was able to get into the seventh inning and get through the seventh for the first time this year. It's way too late in the season to just be getting through seven so, hopefully, I can build off that and have some nice long outings going forward."

It was Noah Syndergaard who started for the Dodgers, allowing 3 runs on 4 hits and a walk, getting a no decision in 5 innings pitched. Yency Almonte and Justin Bruihl each threw scoreless innings before Victor Gonzalez allowed 3 runs while only getting an out. Tyler Cyr finished the 8th after.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Syndergaard's start that "It was huge. Not only did it give us a chance to win tonight, but it gives us a chance to win tomorrow staying away from some leverage guys, and building his pitch count up to have him ready to take his next turn is also a positive."

Up next, the series concludes on Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals will give the start to Jack Flaherty, while Clayton Kershaw goes for the Dodgers.
