It seems like no matter what happens, Shohei Ohtani does something brilliant. Chad Wallach homered, Ohtani reached base 5 times, and the Los Angeles Angeles defeated the Baltimore Orioles 9-5 on Monday night in Baltimore.

Despite a shaky start on the mound, Ohtani reached base 5 times at the plate and fell a double short of the cycle in the Angels latest win, just their 4th in 10 games. He's the first starting pitcher since 1964 to reach base at least 5 times in a single game, with the last being Mel Stottlemyre of the Yankees.

Ohtani said of the feat after the game that "I’m sure all those records come because the sample size is so small. So I don’t really look too deeply into it. But today I had a bad beginning of the game, giving up those runs. So that was the thought about the game today."

Zach Neto gave the Angels a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a sac fly. In the bottom of the inning, Adam Frazier hit a two run home run to put the Orioles ahead 2-1. In the top of the 3rd inning, Gio Urshela doubled in two runs to put the Angels back ahead by a 3-2 score. Anthony Santander then hit a two run home run in the bottom of the 3rd to make it 4-3 Orioles.

Wallach tied it back up for the Angels in the 4th with a solo home run. Ohtani then followed it up with a towering 3 run home run to right field, putting the Angels ahead 7-4. Matt Thaiss then hit an RBI double to make it 8-4 Angels. In the top of the 5th, Hunter Renfroe added an RBI double to make it 9-4, and Cedric Mullins hit a solo home run in the bottom of the 5th to make it a 9-5 score.

Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said of Ohtani postgame that "He’s one of the greatest players we’ve seen. He’s a special talent, and I don’t think that we’re going to probably see anybody that talented that can do what he can do on the mound and at the plate."

Ohtani toed the rubber for the Angels as well, allowing 5 runs on 4 hits and two walks in 7 innings to get his 5th win of the season, striking out two hitters. Chris Devenski then pitched a scoreless 8th inning, followed by Matt Moore doing the same in the 9th to seal the win.

Rookie Grayson Rodriguez started for the Orioles, getting charged with 8 runs on 9 hits and 3 walks, lasting just 3 1/3 innings. Logan Gillaspie allowed one run in 1 2/3 innings after Rodriguez. Austin Voth, Bryan Baker, Danny Coulombe, and Mike Baumann each threw scoreless innings in relief.

Frazier talked about Rodriguez's start that "He just made a few too many mistakes tonight, and they’ve got some really good hitters in their lineup, and they showed that. He’s got the stuff to play here, though, so it’s just a matter of executing a little better, and I think he’ll be just fine."

Up next, the second game of the series is on Tuesday night. Chase Silseth will get the start for the Angels, while Dean Kremer goes for the Orioles.
