Going south of the border was generous to the San Diegans. Austin Nola homered, Matt Carpenter drove in the winning runs, and the San Diego Padres defeated the San Francisco Giants 6-4 on Sunday in Mexico City.

In a short two game weekend series in Mexico City, the Padres won both to get over .500, now sitting at 15-14. Once trailing in the game 4-0, they rattled off 6 unanswered runs, with both Nola and Carpenter driving in two runs.

Carpenter said of the series that "We had this marked on the schedule as a series we were really looking forward to, one that we knew would be really exciting. Mexico City didn't let us down. I'm looking at this as potentially the series that jump-starts our club and gets us on a roll."

LaMonte Wade Jr gave the Giants the lead right away, making it 1-0 in the first inning on a solo home run. JD Davis hit a solo home run of his own in the second inning, doubling the lead to 2-0. In the 4th inning, Mitch Haniger hit another solo home run to make it 3-0 and Mike Yastrzemski hit an RBI single to make it a 4-0 Giants lead.

In the 5th inning, the Padres comeback started. Nola got the Padres on the board with a two run home run to center field, cutting the deficit to 4-2. Juan Soto then cut the deficit to 4-3 with an RBI single that scored Fernando Tatis Jr. Jake Cronenworth tied the game in the 8th with an RBI single and then Carpenter hit a two run double to make it a 6-4 game, giving the Padres the lead for good.

Getting the start for the Padres was Yu Darvish, who got a no decision. Darvish allowed 4 runs on 9 hits, striking out 9 hitters in 6 innings pitched. Luis Garcia got the win with two shutout innings out of the bullpen. Josh Hader worked the 9th and got the save, his 10th of the year.

Darvish said of his start that "The home run at the first at-bat really surprised me, but I got some advice from pitching coach Ruben Niebla and I could settle down for a good outing. Under these conditions you realize that there are some pitches that don´t move like you want, and my job was to find the ones that do work."

Alex Cobb got the start for the Giants, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits and 7 strikeouts in 5 innings. Scott Alexander and John Brebbia threw scoreless innings before Tyler Rogers got the loss when he allowed two runs while getting just one out. Camilo Doval got the final two outs of the 8th inning.

Cobb said of the loss that "We had it right there in our grasp, and it slipped away a little bit. It’s hard to really just go back and evaluate this series and really try to make adjustments off it. I really enjoyed it, the environment was great, everything was great, but this isn’t really the way we play baseball normally."

Both teams start their next series on Monday night. The Padres host the Cincinnati Reds with Blake Snell starting. The Giants travel to face the Houston Astros, with Ross Stripling getting the start.
