Big rallies are a thing in baseball this season. Matt Carpenter drove in 3 runs, Juan Soto had two RBI's, and the San Diego Padres defeated the Miami Marlins with a 9-4 victory on Tuesday night in Miami.

The Padres and Marlins were tied 4-4 entering the 9th inning. The Padres then rattled off 5 runs in the 9th to pull away and pick up the win in Florida. Carpenter and Soto were the leaders in the lineup, driving in 5 of the 9 runs between the two of them.

Carpenter said of the play of the offense that "The way we answered back as an offense, they score, we come back and score again, it was just great at-bats top to bottom. A little bit of a showing of what we know this offense can do."

Garrett Cooper gave the Marlins a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning on an RBI single. In the top of the 4th, Carpenter tied the game 1-1 with an RBI double. Bryan De La Cruz then hit a two run home run in the bottom of the inning, putting the Marlins ahead 3-1. Juan Soto made it 3-2 in the 5th with an RBI single, then De La Cruz hit an RBI single in the 6th to make it 4-2 Marlins.

The Padres tied the game 4-4 in the 7th on RBI singles from Soto and Fernando Tatis Jr. In the 9th, an RBI single from Bogaerts put the Padres ahead 5-4, then Soto scored on an error to put the Padres ahead by a 6-4 score. Carpenter then hit a two run double to make it 8-4, then Brandon Dixon scored on a sac fly to make it a 9-4 game.

Carpenter said of the offense after the game that "This is a really good group of proven hitters in here. As we know in baseball, there’s ebbs and flows that go through a season. Guys get hot. Guys get cold. Collectively, we’ve been pretty cold as an offense. But today was a great showing, and one that hopefully we’ll build off of."

Ryan Weathers got the start for the Padres, allowing 3 runs on 7 hits over 4 innings pitched. After that, the bullpen provided 5 innings of one run ball, with Domingo Tapia, Tim Hill, Steven Wilson, Nick Martinez, and Brent Honeywell all pitched an inning each.

Sandy Alcantara was the starter for the Marlins, getting charged with 4 runs on 5 hits and 5 walks in 6 1/3 innings. Tanner Scott pitched one inning before JT Chargois and Andrew Nardi each got one out. Dylan Floro gave up 5 runs without getting an out, needing Bryan Hoeing to finish the 9th inning.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said of the loss that "All the leadoff walks scored. We have some stolen base stuff to clean up. Just self-inflicted wounds there. That’s a tough one. We had the chance to break it open a few times there, had a lot of guys on with the right guys up and just could not break through."

The series will continue on Wednesday night in Miami. The Padres will send Blake Snell to the mound to start, while the Marlins start Braxton Garrett.
